Turning Conversations into Connections

Turning Conversations into Connections

Ever notice how much richer conversations are when you’re chatting face-to-face instead of through a screen? There’s something about being there in person that just makes things click. This past week I got a refreshing reminder of just how cool it is to meet up and dive deep into conversations.

Old School Hollywood Style!

So, there I was at the Wealth Management EDGE conference in Hollywood, FL last week, soaking up some Florida sun (my fave!) and, more importantly, spending quality time with some folks I truly admire in our industry. It was a blast catching up with old friends, making some new ones, and sharing what’s new.

I had one chat that started pretty standard -- we were talking about the new wave of AI tech hitting our industry. But then, we just clicked, and suddenly we're brainstorming potential projects to do together. It’s amazing how a simple chat can open doors to exciting opportunities.

It funny....as extroverted & outgoing as I appear, I am far more introverted than one might imagine. While I love, love, love speaking on stages, doing podcasts, and making media appearances, I am probably the LAST person to strike up a conversation with someone I don't already know. Anyone else like that?

Here are a few tips I've embraced to make initiating those connections a bit easier.

Three Great Ways to Spark Conversation

  1. Celebrate Their Wins: "What's the coolest thing you've done recently?" It’s a fun way to get someone talking about what they’re passionate about. There are some really BIG things my EDGE friends have done lately (I'm talking to you Matt Halloran ...you guys at ProudMouth are on fire!).
  2. Talk Shop on Trends: "Hey, have you tried using (whatever the latest & greatest trend is) in your biz yet?" It shows you’re in the loop and kicks off a really savvy exchange. Wanna know the latest & greatest on all things WealthTech, connect with my girl Diana Cabrices - she is definitely one to know!
  3. Conference Goals: "What made you decide to come to this event?" It’s light, easy, and can lead you to find common ground quickly. For me...last week was about catching up with some incredible people & meeting their cool friends: Mary Kate Gulick Eric Cott Kay Lynn Mayhue, CFP?, AEP?, RFC? Suzanne Siracuse Penny Phillips Suad Abdalla Karen Weiskopf Sarah Johnson Candice D. Carlton Lindsey Lewis, MBA, ChFC?, CFP? Johnny Sandquist Domenick D'Andrea, AIF?, CRC?, CPFA? and so many more. You guys made my week!

Remember, it’s not about collecting business cards -- it’s about building genuine connections that might just turn into something awesome down the road. And speaking of roads, I’m already looking ahead to the rest of 2024 and into 2025.

What about you? Any can't miss conferences on your calendar? Let me know in the comments.

Cheers to a great week,

Kristin, great job highlighting the true value of face-to-face interactions, especially in an age where digital communication is so prevalent. It's great to hear about your time at the Wealth Management EDGE conference and how it sparked meaningful conversations and potential collaborations. Your tips for sparking conversation are spot on and will be incredibly helpful for those of us who might feel a bit shy in these settings. Which would include me ??
