The Unconventional Path to Leadership Success – 3 Key Tips for Leaders

Leadership today is about adaptability, boldness, and empowering others. Michael Olaye’s career, as discussed on my podcast Confessions of a Successful Leader, demonstrates how unconventional routes can lead to remarkable success. His journey from self-taught coder to global CEO offers valuable lessons for any leader looking to navigate the complexities of modern business.

Here are three key tips, drawn from Michael’s experiences, that every leader can implement:

1. Take Calculated Risks?

?Michael didn’t wait for opportunities—he created them. His boldness in knocking on doors without prior appointments is a reminder that sometimes success requires stepping into the unknown. Playing it safe often limits growth, while taking thoughtful risks opens new possibilities.?

Tip: Create your own opportunities. Take calculated risks that push you beyond your comfort zone, whether it’s seeking new partnerships or diving into unfamiliar markets.

2. Communicate Openly and Honestly?

One of the most valuable lessons Michael learned was the power of clear communication. Whether delivering bad news or outlining the future vision, transparency builds trust. In leadership, silence or poor communication can cause more damage than the challenge itself.?

Tip: Prioritize transparency. Open, honest, and frequent communication fosters trust and alignment within your team, especially during challenging times.

3. Empower Your Team?

Leadership isn’t about controlling everything—it’s about building a team that can operate without constant supervision. Michael’s approach to nurturing high-performance teams is essential for long-term success. A leader’s role is to equip their team with the confidence, skills, and autonomy to excel.?

Tip: Delegate and trust your team. Focus on empowering your team to make decisions and take ownership, ensuring they can thrive independently when needed.?

Leadership is a balance of courage, communication, and empowerment. By applying these three strategies, leaders can inspire their teams and achieve long-term success.

Fictional Journal Entry by Milena Jesenská – October 8, 1939

The cold of this October night does little to calm the storm within me. For days, I have felt the looming shadow of my arrest, and tonight, I know it is only a matter of time before they come for me. How ironic the freedom I fight for, the dignity of the Czech people, seems so far from reach, yet burns so fiercely in my heart. I do not fear my fate, for I have faced shadows like this before. But still, there is something deep within, a lingering ache that brings me back to my earliest days, to a wound that has never quite healed.

My childhood, though gilded with the privileges of a respected family, was marked by the cold absence of affection. I grew up learning to appear strong, as my father demanded, to mask the cracks beneath the surface. I learned to silence my vulnerability, to hide my tears. And yet, that very suppression taught me the strength I would need for the battles I face today. The Germans may occupy our land, but they will never occupy our hearts. Still, I would be lying if I said I am unafraid.

Beneath the surface, I fear the horrors that may await me in the coming days. The Gestapo does not forgive acts of rebellion, and my work with the resistance has made me a prime target. They will attempt to break me, just as I was broken as a child, but this time, I will not bend. I fight not for myself, but for the countless others whose voices have been silenced by this monstrous regime. I have seen too many good people perish, too many families torn apart, to allow my fears to rule me.

How does one prepare for the inevitable? I draw strength from the women I have seen resist with such grace, their defiance wrapped in quiet dignity. There is an inner fire that I have carried with me since I was a girl—a flame that my father’s cruelty could not extinguish, and which the Germans will never extinguish. It is this fire that guides me now.

I must remain steadfast, for this struggle is greater than myself. The trauma of my youth shaped me, but it will not define me. My fear is no longer a prison; it is a reminder of what is at stake. When they take me away, I will walk with my head held high, for I know that in the end, we will reclaim our freedom. They may try to shatter my spirit, but they do not understand that, like so many of us, my strength comes from the depths of suffering.

Let them come. I have nothing left to lose, and everything to gain in the fight for liberty. For my people, for my beloved Prague, I will not falter.
