Turning 40: A New Beginning, Not an End

Turning 40: A New Beginning, Not an End

I used to think hitting 40 meant getting old. That it was a sign I should start slowing down, that my best years were behind me. But I’ve come to realise that turning 40 is more like reaching the halfway point in the journey of life and it’s still not about having everything figured out, but about knowing I’m on the right path forward.

Each decade brings its own opportunities and challenges. I’ve learned that the key to making the most of this stage of life is shifting from "should do" to "must do." It’s about taking action, setting priorities, and making the changes that truly matter—because time no longer feels endless.

Health and Fitness at 40

Staying active has always been important to me, but my approach to training has evolved. In my 20s and early 30s, it was about pushing hard, chasing performance, and striving for visible results. Now, I train to stay strong, mobile, and energised for the long term.

  • Strength training keeps my body resilient and functional. We lose around 1% of total muscle mass every year past 30.
  • Cardio maintains my heart health and endurance. This is important, because the risks of heart related diseases increase as you age, some because of natural causes, and others because of the lifestyle we lead as we get older.
  • Nutrition fuels my energy, focus, and recovery. Eating right is so important. The foods that I could get away with eating and it not have an effect in my 20s and 30s are no longer an option if I want to be the best version of myself.
  • Sleep and stress management have become non-negotiables. One of the key factors in weight management and overall health is sleep. Another being stress, and in reality now, having the emotional stability to not sweat the small stuff ,makes life so much easier.

The goal isn’t just to look good—it’s to feel good, avoid injuries, and continue thriving in all areas of life, but most of all

Lessons Learned

One of the biggest lessons I’ve taken from this transition is that what worked in my 20s doesn’t necessarily work now. Adaptation is key.

  • Sustainability matters more than intensity. It’s about finding a rhythm that works for my body and lifestyle, not chasing extremes.
  • Mindset is everything. If I tell myself I’m getting old, I’ll start to feel it. But if I tell myself I’m just getting started, that’s exactly how I’ll approach life.
  • Continuous learning keeps me sharp. Just like training my body, keeping my mind engaged ensures growth and prevents stagnation.

If you’re approaching 40 (or beyond) and feeling like it’s a downward slope, challenge that narrative. It’s never too late to take control of your health, set new goals, and create the life you want. The key is to adapt, stay open to change, and prioritise what truly matters.

For me, turning 40 is just the beginning. It’s a milestone that marks experience, self-awareness, and an opportunity to shape the next chapter with clarity and purpose. And if you’re reading this, you’re not done either—so let’s make it count.
