Turn on your Cameras!

Have you ever thought of why at most “open-house” when you walk in to decide if this is going to be the purchase of your new home, you are greeted with the delicious aroma of cookies being baked in the oven? Why the home you walked in has a fruit basket on the table, or the sound of water flowing from a water feature.

When we think of human senses we think of eyesight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. They all work in sync, the smell of the cookies will let you imagine the taste & will remind you of mum reaching in to get you the warm cookies. The sound of the water will bring you the zen feeling of being in tune with nature. Our senses are synced to ensure the desired message gets to us, the fastest and with the most accurate intent. How do we then apply the synchronicity of our senses when in teams?

?Working on just one sense, the sight makes an amazing change. Having spent 2 years of online meetings, the dynamics when cameras are on is simply different versus when its off.

I have noticed that in my classes, team meetings, and catch-ups, turning the camera on, empowered the team. The speaker/presenter had more gusto in delivery, the audience seemed more engaged, and the team laughed more, shared more, and learned more.?

On the flip side, when cameras were off, it was more of a downloading session and often it was followed by either “can you say that again?” or “can you hear me” it was just disengaging for me personally. wondering where they were or what are they doing.

Visibility boosts productivity, be in via dashboards in SharePoint, that provide up-to-date information that simplifies decision making and elevates the state of readiness to take appropriate actions or in being present, where at meetings or classes we are not just a black box with a name but a person who is being involved in the session.

Being Visible makes a difference, the news on radio with a live picture is the television news. Knowledge transfer needs visuals, needs creative inputs, and needs a splash of colours. Get involved, get productive, and get visual!

p.s there are some moments my camera is off too, like when I am having a meal, scratching my nose, or when I am still in my jammies, other times my camera is on. What about you?
