A Turn Up For Mergers?

As the graph below shows, the number of mergers publically investigated by the CMA has been declining sharply and more or less continually since early 2020.

This despite the anticipated increase in cases after leaving the EU, the new ￡1m turnover test for some types of case and reported rises in M&A activity for many months.

However.........May - usually one of the quieter months for new cases - saw more cases opened than in any month for over a year, prompting a noticeable uptick in the graph.

The start of a long-heralded upturn in case numbers? Or just a temporary blip?
