My name is Peter, and I am an audiophile. The world of sound, music and all things audio have been the passions of my life. I’m not just a creator and facilitator, I also just love to listen. Big time.

It’s the arrival of the soundbar in our living rooms that has added a new accessible, dimension to our film and music experience. This has been ably enhanced by the ground-breaking Dolby Atmos. Apple TV & Apple Music have become some of the pioneers of the spatial audio explosion.

Apparently, over 80% of Apple Music subscribers listened to music in spatial audio in 2022. This has probably got a lot to with the Dolby Atmos enabled Airpod Max headphones and the Airpods Pro 2. These have definitely changed my commute to an experience of space, unlike the train carriage. This has resulted in an eruption of music, new and old, being released in Dolby Atmos.

Live music has also been ignited by Dolby Atmos, giving you the feeling of being at a live gig. When you close your eyes, you can almost imagine being in the crowd at Glastonbury with the comfort of your own loo …… Also, for someone like me who likes to take a trip back in time to a Bowie gig (other heroes are available) it’s pretty, freakin’ awesome. Dolby Atmos also transforms classic albums you know and love.

When it comes to film it’s again Apple with Apple TV+ that seem to be bringing the most to the party. All new Apple Original Films/Series’ are being created in Dolby Atmos. I’ve been blown away by series like ‘Severance’, documentaries like ‘Prehistoric Planet’ and music biography ‘The Velvet Underground’ by Todd Haynes’. This programme seemed to use every speaker, Lou Reed in one corner and John Cale in another. When Venus in Furs kicked in it literally sent shivers down my spine. Not to mention the awesome series 1971 by the team that brought us the all-time best-selling documentary Amy.

Now, ?I know I’m beginning to sound like I work for Apple. I don’t, in fact I’ve just upgraded my system and would you believe, none of it is actually Apple. I’ve thrown out the TV and got myself a pretty decent home cinema setup with a film screen.

There is a huge choice of systems out there at all prices. I’ve gone for a Samsung Q990B Soundbar which has a 3D Object Tracking Surround System with Wireless Dolby Atmos. It also has rear speakers and a massive sub bass giving the system 650 watts of power. This really brings the noise and delivers a truly immersive experience that puts the theatre into home theatre.

The projector I’ve chosen is the XGIMI Horizon Pro which has true 4k technology and powerful Harmon Kardon dual 8w speakers built in. One of the greatest innovations is Android TV streaming apps like; Prime Video, Disney+ and of course Apple TV+ integrated into the system, meaning no need to hook up an external device.

I’m off to get the pop corn ready, sit back and hit play, pull up a chair!
