Turn images with tables or charts into editable Excel data from within Excel

In a customer training session yesterday, I showed a ChatGPT feature I shared with you two weeks ago: converting photos of tables or charts into editable data.

Some participants understandably raised security concerns. One attendee even surprised me by pointing out that Excel now supports OCR, enabling data extraction directly from images within the app—no need to upload sensitive information. Just go to the Data tab and select From Picture on the left.

Surprise.

I have a course on using AI to work more effectively with slides. Thus I test different AI functionalities daily. And, indeed, Exel has this feature. However, you have to be prepared that it is not perfect. Even for the table as simple as the attached, AI failed to read the info correctly. At the same time, yes, it is a step forward but one needs to be ready to check and correct the info after extracting. For more complex data extraction tasks I suggest free Gemini. It works better than ChatGpt Pro or Copilot.
