It's November, and it's time to talk about turkeys.
Thinking about buying turkey for the upcoming holidays? You may not find the best prices, or in fact, you may not find a good bird size at all.
Just as it sounds:
?WE ARE IN A TURKEY SHORTAGE!
Bird flu has hit poultry this 2022 and with it, production has been reduced and prices have risen, making it a bit difficult to get a turkey on the table that's 20+lbs this Thanksgiving and Christmas.
But how significantly have prices increased?
So far, prices have increased 28% according to USDA data, where prices increased to $1.47 per pound, compared to last year's price of $1.15 per pound.
The U.S. government has announced that due to bird flu outbreaks, finding sizable birds this season is going to be a challenge. According to CDC data, bird flu has killed more than 8 million turkeys!
You may be wondering...
Are the turkeys I find in the market safe to eat?
YES, THEY ARE! All birds that are for sale for consumption are inspected by the USDA and must meet quality standards, as well as various other certifications.
?So… if your Thanksgiving dinner option included birds, you may want to reconsider other options.
