Turkey to triple electricity interconnection capacity

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said that Turkey aims to significantly increase its electricity interconnections with neighboring countries and expand its electricity exports to regional markets.

?

Speaking at the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly in Abu Dhabi, Minister Bayraktar highlighted plans to soon enhance electricity supply to Syria, with the goal of contributing to regional stability.

?

He noted that regional interconnections and collaboration are becoming vital for promoting stability and mutual growth. He also stressed Turkey's efforts to meet rising demand, reduce reliance on imports, and achieve carbon neutrality within the next three decades.

?

Renewable energy is central to addressing these challenges. The country plans to increase its renewable energy capacity from 32 to 120 GW by 2035. This will require an investment of approximately 80 billion dollars and the development of a more resilient and robust network.

?

He explained that the Government is focused on creating what is termed a green network, with plans for a transmission system upgrade, requiring about 28 billion dollars in investment over the next decade.

?

Minister Bayraktar emphasized that policy stability, along with innovative business models, is essential to attract international investment. He also underscored the importance of closer regional cooperation, noting that grid infrastructure is crucial for energy transition.
