Turkey is Not Sentenced to Expensive Meat (in the Medium to Long Term)

As someone who has been involved in agricultural financing and worked as a manager in a company focused on meat, I would like to share a few thoughts on meat production in Turkey.

To increase livestock farming and the number of animals in Turkey:

The price of milk should increase. If the price of milk doubles from its current level and the government subsidises the portion above the market price, the number of animals in the country will increase. Pregnant cows that will give birth to calves are necessary. Females born from them will be used for milk and males for butchering. However, if dairy farmers cannot make money, they will also slaughter their dairy cows, leading to a rapid decrease in the animal population in the country.

  1. Turkey is not geographically suitable for raising cattle. We do not have marshy lands like the Netherlands. Cows' teeth are not suitable for cutting grass. They tear long grass with their tongues. However, in Anatolia, where there is no irrigation and few pastures, cattle farming is done with feed, thus increasing the expenses of farmers. As a result, farmers do not make money and rapidly move away from animal husbandry. The solution is for Turkey to enter sheep farming, just like Australia. Sheep are like lawnmowers. They trim even the shortest grass.
  2. Family farming should be supported, pastures should be opened for use, and where necessary, they should be improved. Sanctions should be imposed on those who own rural land but do not cultivate it.

Additionally:

Modern techniques and scientific methods should be used to increase productivity in livestock farming. Importance should be given to animal welfare and necessary legal regulations should be made. The marketing and distribution of meat and dairy products should be done efficiently. Consumer awareness and encouragement of domestic production are important. By taking such steps, meat production in Turkey can be increased, and the dependency on expensive meat can be eliminated.
