Call for Code 2025: Harnessing AI for Social Innovation to Tackle Social and Humanitarian Issues
Call for Code Creator David Clark Cause, alongside founding partner IBM, Global Impact Partner United Nations Human Rights, and Program Affiliate the Linux Foundation, invites developers and problem solvers to join the 2025 Call for Code Global Challenge.
Since its inception in 2018, the initiative has united innovators worldwide to create technology-driven solutions addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. This year, the challenge focuses on using AI to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to drive social good and make a tangible impact in communities globally.
Participants will engage in five qualifying hackathons, each themed around one of the 17 SDGs, using technologies such as watsonx ai, IBM’s AI portfolio, and IBM Cloud services. The first hackathon, scheduled from March 20 to 31, 2025, will coincide with UN World Water Day on March 22 and challenge teams to develop an AI virtual agent addressing SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Additional hackathons will cover themes like Climate Action, which will be aligned with the 2025 Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit.
Teams of one to five developers can win prizes, including $5,000 per hackathon and conference passes to IBM TechXchange 2025, with top teams competing for grand prizes of $50,000 and open-source project support from the Linux Foundation.

Meta to Launch Standalone AI App as It Accelerates Its $65 Billion AI Push
Meta is set to debut a standalone AI app in the second quarter, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ambitious drive into artificial intelligence, according to CNBC’s report citing anonymous sources.
Until now, Meta’s AI capabilities have been accessible only via web browsers or integrated into popular apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. This new standalone app is expected to offer a more streamlined and dedicated user experience, further reinforcing Meta’s commitment to transforming its digital ecosystem with advanced AI solutions.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg is spearheading this push, with the company planning to invest $65 billion in AI technology throughout the year. This aggressive investment strategy underscores Meta’s determination to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape and compete with other major industry players.
In related news, Meta has recently taken decisive internal action by terminating approximately 20 employees after discovering they had shared “confidential information.” This crackdown highlights the company’s stringent approach to data security and corporate governance as it navigates the complexities of scaling innovative technologies. With its enhanced focus on AI, Meta is positioning itself for a transformative year, aiming to deliver cutting-edge products that redefine user experiences and secure its leadership in the tech industry.
