UK GOVERNMENT TO DELIVER £8BN LOWER THAMES CROSSING TUNNEL

The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has confirmed the government’s commitment to deliver the proposed Lower Thames Crossing tunnel project.

Lower Thames Crossing is a proposed road crossing of the Thames estuary downstream of the Dartford Crossing, connecting the counties of Kent and Essex.

The nearly 14.3 miles (23km) route passes through the districts of Thurrock and Gravesham.

According to Rachel Reeve's statement, the road tunnel construction would cost more than £8bn, which will be mostly financed by the private sector.

PARALLEL THIMBLE SHOAL TUNNEL PROJECT ADVANCES WITH TBM BREAKTHROUGH

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) has announced that the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project in the US state of Virginia has hit a major milestone.

The 13.1m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) ‘Chessie’ successfully broke through the receiving pit on Two Island at Thimble Shoal Channel, reaching her end destination.

CBBT said the 325ft-long TBM will complete the final phase of mining once the temporary bracing struts and steel beam are removed from the receiving wall.

The $756m tunnel project involves constructing a 5,700ft bored tunnel connecting two southbound trestles of the existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The structure links the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area to Virginia’s eastern shore.

SIDDHABABA TUNNEL PROJECT IN NEPAL ACHIEVES BREAKTHROUGH

The Siddhababa Tunnel Project in Nepal reached a major milestone on 24 January 2025, with the breakthrough of its main tunnel.

The NPR7.34bn ($53m)project, located along the Siddhartha Highway, aims to enhance connectivity on the Butwal-Tansen road section.

The tunnel, measuring 1,126m in length, features double lanes, an 8.5m width, and sidewalks to facilitate pedestrian safety.

Tunnel excavation commenced in December 2023, and construction is scheduled to conclude by 22 March 2027.

SIMPLON TUNNEL TO BE RENOVATED OVER NEXT FOUR YEARS

Swiss Federal Railways SBB announced that the renovation of the Simplon Tunnel, between Valais in southwest Switzerland and Italy, will be carried out over the next four years.

According to a joint statement by the Swiss Federal Railways and BLS, the first construction stage is expected to start in February and end by July this year.

BLS (Bern-L?tschberg-Simplon Railway) is a Swiss railway company that operates regional and long-distance rail services in central and western Switzerland.

The car loading trains between Brig in Valais and Iselle in Italy are planned to run every two hours, instead of 1.5 hours.

FEBRUARY 2025 BTS EVENING LECTURE

This month's British Tunnelling Society evening lecture will focus on The Woodsmith Project and be delivered in collaboration with MinSouth.

The Woodsmith Project in North Yorkshire is a landmark Anglo American mining development?featuring a 37-kilometre tunnel to transport Polyhalite from Whitby to Teesside via conveyor.

In 2023, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) set a world record with a 25.8-kilometre single drive; now surpassing 29 kilometres.

The presentation will provide an overview of the TBM cutterhead maintenance using timber heading techniques, showcasing STRABAG’s engineering innovations, ongoing progress on 1,600-metre shafts at the mine site and how challenges have been addressed since the 2021 BTS presentation.

CHINA ACCELERATES CONSTRUCTION OF 602M TUNNEL ON CHINA-RUSSIA RAILWAY

The State Council of the People’s Republic of China has announced that the construction of a new railway tunnel to enhance China-Europe freight connectivity is advancing rapidly.

The 602m tunnel is under construction along the railway line connecting Suifenhe and the China-Russia border line in Suifenhe, which is situated northeast of China’s Heilongjiang Province.

It is set for completion in May 2025, replacing three 120-year-old tunnels.

Construction on the new Suifenhe tunnel continues even during the Spring Festival, with workers carrying out routine monitoring and inspection.

ONTARIO PLANS HAZEL MCCALLION LINE EXTENSION WITH BRAMPTON TUNNEL CONNECTION

The Ontario government has announced its plans to extend the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) into downtown Brampton and Mississauga. Additionally, a rapid transit?tunnel will be built for the Brampton section of the segment.

This underground extension will connect the Hazel McCallion Line to downtown Brampton, improving transit access to one of Canada’s growing cities.

The project aims to offer fast, affordable, and reliable transportation for more people.

The Hazel McCallion Line Extension to Downtown Brampton spans about 4km. This extension is being advanced separately from the main Hazel McCallion Line corridor, which is currently under construction.
