See the highlights of 2024 below:
HARD ROCK RECTANGULAR PIPE JACKING MACHINE BREAKS THROUGH
The world’s first hard rock rectangular pipe jacking machine broke through on a road project in Chongqing, China.
CREC 1112, developed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG), broke through on the pipe jacking section of N-Standard-Partition Street Interchange C-Traffic-Node A-Ramp project in Chongqing Liangjiang New Area.
The project links Lushan Avenue near the North Square of Chongqing North Railway Station and the Chongqing Inner Ring Expressway.
CREG said it is the first time a large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking machine completed full-face excavation, solving the problem of blind area excavation, especially in hard rock strata, by a non-circular TBM.
SKANKSA WINS NEW YORK TUNNEL UPGRADE
Amtrak began major rehabilitation of New York’s East River Tunnel this year following the award of a construction contract to a Skanska E-J ERT joint venture.
The tunnel, which opened in 1910, comprises four tubes – two of which require significant repairs and comprehensive reconstruction following damage caused by floodwaters during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The East River Tunnel Rehabilitation Project will demolish all existing tunnel systems down to the liner, before completely restoring the two tubes. During the project, one tube will be closed at a time to minimise disruption to rail services.
The tunnel connects New York Penn Station – the US’s busiest train station – to the east and is used daily by more than 450 Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit trains.
GOTTHARD TUNNEL TBM PASSES FAT
The Herrenknecht AG TBM for Lot 241 – the main northern section of the Gotthard road tunnel’s second tube – passed its Factory Acceptance Test.
The Implenia and Frutiger Gruppe consortium accepted the TBM at a ceremony at Herrenknecht AG’s Schwanau headquarters.
The 12.3m diameter TBM is 120m long, weighs 1850 tonnes and has a maximum propulsive force of 95000kN.
It was then dismantled and transported to G?schenen in Switzerland for assembly. It is scheduled to be launched in February to excavate a tunnel of approximately 7km.
