Welcome to this week's newsletter as we look to bring you the highlights from?Tunnels and Tunnelling International?on LinkedIn from the last 7 days.
This week we are pleased to share some interesting undersea projects, that although still in the early planning phases, should prove hugely interesting and impactful projects. We will be following them both with interest.
In the UK there was a number of HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd milestones to mark as well. A huge number of passionate people are delivering the project and we are thrilled to see the project continue to take shape.
Last week also saw Andy A. ( 嘉科工程 ) awarded the prestigious James Clark medal by the British Tunnelling Society - congratulations again, Andy!
Our pick of the highlights are below:
DL E&C WINS KOREAN UNDERSEA TUNNEL PROJECT
South Korean construction company?DL E&C Co., Ltd?has won the design and build contract for the Namhae-Yeosu Undersea Tunnel Project.
The 5.76km-long tunnel is part of the Seo-myeon Namhae–Shindeok Yeosu National Road Project – a new 8.09km four-lane highway connecting Shindeok-dong in Yeosu and Seomyeon in Namhae on the country’s southern coast. The total project value is US$540m.

HS2 UNVEILS BROMFORD TUNNEL TBM
HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd?has unveiled the TBM that will dig the Bromford Tunnel, between Water Orton in North Warwickshire and Washwood Heath in Birmingham.
The 5.6km tunnel is the fourth twin-bore tunnel to be started on the high-speed rail project. The tunnel will take trains into Birmingham as they approach Curzon Street Station in the heart of the city.
The 125m-long?Herrenknecht AG?TBM, operated by?HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd?contractor?Balfour Beatty VINCI, will take around 16 months to complete each bore.

INDIA’S FIRST UNDERSEA RAIL TUNNEL MOVES A STEP CLOSER
India’s?National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL)?has signed a contract with?AFCONS Infrastructure Limited - A Shapoorji Pallonji Group Company?for the construction of a high-speed rail tunnel, including the country’s first undersea rail link.
Package MAHSR C-2 is part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor and covers construction of a 21km tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata in the state of Maharashtra, with a 7km undersea section at Thane Creek.

BILBAO METRO CONTRACT AWARDED
ETS?Euskal Trenbide Sarea - Red Ferroviaria Vasca?(the Basque Railway Network) has awarded the second section of Bilbao’s Metro Line 5 to a joint venture of?ACCIONA,?SACYR,?ALTUNA Y URIA SA?and?Bycam Servicios Edificios e Infraestructuras S.A.
The 2.8km route will connect the neighbourhoods of Aperribai and Galdakao.?

METRO TUNNEL TRIALS RECYCLED GLASS IN CONCRETE
Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project is working with the?University of Melbourne?and industry partners to trial the use of crushed glass in structural concrete at the new State Library Station.
The trial has demonstrated that 25% of virgin sand used in concrete mix can be replaced with recycled crushed glass, reducing reliance on virgin sand and diverting waste glass from landfill.
