A busy week once again for Tunnels and Tunnelling International with lots of news and attending the first British Tunnelling Society evening lecture after the Summer break at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London. A great turnout for a very interesting lecture we hope to bring you soon.

WORK BEGINS ON HS2’S LONGEST GREEN TUNNEL
HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd main works contractor EKFB has begun assembling the project’s longest ‘green tunnel’.
The shallow 2.7km-long cut and cover tunnel is designed to blend the high-speed railway into the rural landscape and reduce disruption for communities around Greatworth in west Northamptonshire. EKFB, a team made up of Eiffage, Kier Group, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall, will excavate a cutting, build the tunnel and then bury it. Trees, shrubs and hedgerows will be planted on top to blend the tunnel into the surrounding countryside.

NZ RAIL PROJECT "SETS NEW INDUSTRY BENCHMARKS"
New Zealand's City Rail Link Ltd (CRL) project has been recognised for its "remarkable" efforts to protect the environment.
CRL’s main contractor, Link Alliance , won the Sustainability & Environmental Excellence Award at the Australasian Rail Industry Awards in Melbourne.
Australasian Railway Association (ARA) chief executive Caroline Wilkie congratulated Link Alliance for what she described as a “significant” achievement.

TUNNELLING PROGRESSES ON OSLO WATER PROJECT
A TBM that will drill one of the tunnels for the Oslo New Water Supply Project has arrived in the Norwegian capital.
The Herrenknecht AG machine was manufactured in Germany, and the largest and heaviest parts were transported by ship to Norway. At Ormsundkaia, they were loaded onto trailers and transported to the construction site at Stubberud.
The TBM will now be assembled in a mountain hall before ?F Ghella JV launches it to bore an 11km-long tunnel from Stubberud to Huseby.

AMTRAK AWARDS FIRST MAJOR CONTRACT FOR FREDERICK DOUGLASS TUNNEL
Amtrak has awarded the first of three major contracts for the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program.
After a year-long competitive procurement, the rail company has selected the Clark Construction Group Stacy and Witbeck, Inc. Joint Venture for the Southern Approach construction package.
The entire investment for the Frederick Douglass Tunnel is estimated at approximately US$6bn (€5.58n), supported in part by federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, along with contributions from Amtrak and the State of Maryland.

FIRST TWO CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR HUDSON TUNNEL PROJECT
The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) has awarded the first two contracts for the Hudson Tunnel Project.
Naik Consulting Group, PC will provide professional construction management and related technical services for the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge and Utility Relocation Project, while Conti LLC will be responsible for construction of the project.
