Tuning In to New Music - April
Friday means new music to listen to, enjoy, and analyze for fun. I've compiled a list below of some of my favorite releases and some thoughts along with them (just in case you are wondering what this 23-year-old thought of them).
Still Woozy’s newest single “Again” goes through the emotions that an individual feels once that person that once meant everything leaves them once again. Within this song, I believe that he portrays going through denial, the first stage of grief.
“This can’t be happening, I must be daydreaming” “Never ever again, until the morning” - Still Woozy in Again
Even though he released Again this week, I also wanted to touch on Shotput. Shotput is a track and field event where competing athletes throw a heavy spherical ball as far as possible, and Still Woozy decided that this would be the perfect song title for his previously released single (and I agree). These two singles that were released back-to-back within a month of each other have extremely different meanings as one is on one end of the spectrum representing newfound love and happiness with “Shotput” and the other representing loneliness and despair after a relationship with “Again”.?
“What can I say? You’ll always get your way with me” “You hit like a shotput and you got me” - Still Woozy in "Shotput"
$uicideboy$, comprised of the rap duo Ruby and Scrim, released their newest track “Are You Going to See the Rose in the Vase, or the Dust on the Table?” and boy is this track emotional. They both address some of their own past childhood traumas and current dilemmas throughout the track with Scrim saying, “Seen my dad OD at 9, was never the same again,” and Ruby in his line, “I’m starting to unravel, surrounded by all these snakes and jackals.” Both of them show extreme vulnerability in their lyrics which makes it easier for their audience to relate to and sympathize with them.?
“I was always told that boys don’t cry, why am I so broke inside?” - $uicideboy$ in "Are You Going to See the Rose in the Vase, or the Dust on the Table?"
This rap duo has constantly proven that they have range when it comes to their song writing, singing, and producing abilities as they release both aggressive and softer tracks with changing themes. Every album released sounds different than the rest, and in my opinion, they are constantly evolving as artists. Being able to evolve and grow as an artist is why I think they have been able to stay relevant for so long, not to mention their massive fan base which has since grown even larger since the rise of their songs on TikTok (social media application) with their songs “For the Last Time,” “Ugliest,” and even in their recently released track “Us Vs. Them.”?

$uicideboy$ & Still Woozy are both . . .
I think that both $uicideboy$ and Still Woozy are in the process of their album rollout and they show the absolute diversity that they are able to reach in music with their newest songs. $uicideboy$ shows this in both the lyrics and the sound of the music with Us Vs. Them, being a heavier and hard-hitting song with deep bass while Are You Going to See the Rose in the Vase or the Dust on the Table? comes with more vulnerable lyrics and a melodic track. Still Woozy maintains somewhat of the same sound with both songs but definitely share different messages and point of views when it comes to the topic of love. Overall, I am very excited to see what else these artists have in store for the rest of 2024.?
Do you need a song to play before your night out? I found one!?
The buildup to Peso Pluma repeating “Pa romper la discoteca” (which roughly translates to “tear up this club” in English) over and over again just scratches something in your brain. This mix is something that will definitely have your group hype and swaying back and forth. The addition of police sirens, hi-hats, and car horns towards the end of the song was not something that I expected but it works and makes for such a fun high energy song.
Try to count all of the different sounds you hear within the first minute of this song and come back to me. Insane right? In my opinion this track mixes Super Mario Bros. nostalgia with varying sounds of childhood as it keeps the tone very light and happy. I believe that Damian’s Room depicts what the room of the child (who is Damian in this case) sounds like with imagination and adventure just hopping off the walls.
(technically was released last week but I’m still going to add because it is a good song)
The experimental hip-hop group, 1999 Write the Future, is known for their colorful and eclectic mixes of sounds and although some think this song isn't that great, I think it shows just how versatile they are. With two beat switches in less than two minutes, this song is a rollercoaster, and I did not want to get off of it. Jean Dawson, who is featured on the song, has had past collaborations with SZA on "NO SZNS," and Mac Demarco on "MENTHOL*." I think that he is definitely an artist to keep your eye on.?
