Tungsten Carbide Buttons For Rock Drill Bits
Cemented carbide is a tough material extensively utilized as a cutting tool and in various industrial applications. It is composed of fine carbide particles bonded together by a metal binder.
Cemented carbide possesses all the essential properties required for cutting tools, such as hardness and strength. The production process involves mixing tungsten carbide (WC) powder with cobalt (Co) powder as a binder, followed by sintering the mixture. This can be likened to the formation of concrete, where small stones (tungsten carbide) are held together by cement (cobalt).
After sintering, cemented carbide exhibits nearly twice the density and about half the volume as it did before the sintering process. The sintered cemented carbide is then ground using a diamond grinding tool to create a cutting tool.
