What do you think about this latest music industry dispute between Keyshia Cole and O.T. Genasis over him doing a parody version of one of her songs: Is she right or should she not be so uptight because at the end of the day, eventually, he will pay?

******************************************************

Hey people!

I wanted to talk about this today because this is another example of how music industry disputes can get out of hand, if people aren’t careful.

What do you think about this:

R&B singer and songwriter Keyshia Cole has recently become embroiled in a dispute with rapper and songwriter O.T. Genasis because he did a track using the backing track and lyrical melody from one of her songs without her permission.

He released his own remix version, which I’m calling a parody, of one of Keyshia Cole’s classic tracks “Love” and she has been getting really annoyed about how much attention it’s receiving.

O.T. Genasis used the backing track and the melody for the song then changed the lyrics and seems to make fun of Keyshia Cole’s original version by attempting to sing in a very off key voice, lol. He has called his version “Never Knew”, his lyrics are an ode to Crip gang affiliation and the media are calling it a “Cripmix”.

The minute I heard it, I immediately saw it as a parody and I have to admit, I was laughing! But, I can say, as a singer and songwriter myself, I can see why she would be annoyed because apparently she usually says no to people when they ask permission because they want to re-record or use her music for their own projects.

Plus, allegedly, he didn’t ask her permission in the first place anyway. So, I’m assuming, when she found out that he had done it without her permission, she was even more upset that he would have the audacity to do that without getting her permission and blessing first. As, not only did he use her music and the lyrical melody but he did it in a mocking way with the way he changed the lyrics and the topic he wrote about, so his version of the song would never be taken seriously by the public.

But Keyshia Cole is serious about her music, so he must have known that a parody version would obviously upset her even more. Maybe it’s because O.T. Genasis already knew that she would say no and he just wanted to do it, so he wasn’t going to take the chance to ask and then run the risk of her possibly blocking him and stop him from doing it altogether.

I also think it’s because he knew that if he did it, once it was out there, it would be getting attention and making money anyway, so then she wouldn’t be able to stop him. I have to say, I think he should’ve asked her first and if she said no then he should have respected her decision. But some people really don’t like to be told no, do they? Lol.

So the only thing I can think that she is really upset about now is that once he did it he didn’t say, “I know you probably wouldn’t have given me permission to do this in the first place but I’ve done it, so here’s some money from the sales, because it is doing well now, even though I know you didn’t want me to do it and I’m assuming you don’t like my version now you’ve heard it!”

If Keyshia Cole goes to court to block O.T. Genasis from continuing to profit from it, after the fact and then tries to sue him for some of that money that he has made, then he will probably end up paying even more then he would’ve had to pay if she had given him her permission in the beginning, had he gone through the proper channels. She might even want some damages on top of any money he has made that he would probably have to pay her, as compensation for the hurt and humiliation that he has caused!

Maybe even if they could have come to some kind of financial agreement, after he had released his version of the track and started making money, then maybe she might not be so annoyed. I think the reason why she keeps talking about it is because she is really upset that he hasn’t even offered her any money. So now, I think it really boils down to a money thing.

I think O.T. Genasis probably used one of Keyshia Cole’s songs to do his parody version because he knows she is passionate about her music and she has a lot of fans. Plus, he realised that once he had done it and released it, then it would be out there and his version of the song would be known too.

So, even if it got pulled from channels like YouTube because of a copyright claim, then it would still exist. Also, once people hear about things like that, they always want to find out what everyone else is talking about and have a listen to it for themselves?

I’m assuming that Keyshia Cole probably doesn’t want people to look for it online, listen to his version and keep streaming or downloading it. But the fact that she keeps talking about it, as she has even mentioned it on her Fox Soul show “One on One with Keyshia Cole” when she was on air and people keep asking her about it in other interviews, means that his version is gaining traction even more.

I know she may be trying to douse the flames and hope people will lose interest in it but she’s actually giving him more attention the more she talks about it?!

Keyshia Cole even reportedly stopped using social media at one point as O.T. Genasis continued to, allegedly, troll her over her annoyance about him releasing his version of the song. It seems like he has been constantly trying to find ways to keep winding her up, which is also keeping her talking about it.

My opinion is that he chose one of Keyshia Cole’s song to use because he knew that she would have something to say about it because she is really passionate about her music and she doesn’t like other artists to use it. I mean, she has been quoted in writing as saying that she wants her classics to be left alone.

O.T. Genasis knew he would really wind her up because even if he had done a serious song using her backing track and maybe even the melody of her lyrics to that track, then she might not have been as angry about it.

But the fact that he did a parody version, which has people laughing and saying that they won’t be able to listen to her original song in the same way anymore, has made it 100 times worse for her. Also, I think he realised that the fact that she would be so genuinely annoyed and keep talking about what he had done would be great free publicity for him.

Usually, other artists tend to deal with this type of thing more privately, I’ve noticed. Then if they get really angry, they just get their lawyers onto it and sue the other person for all they can get!

This type of thing where somebody is trying to profit off someone else’s ideas and work so blatantly without wanting to pay them anything, let alone properly, reminds me of when Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams got into hot water and had to pay millions to the family and estate of the late singer Marvin Gaye because of their track “Blurred Lines”.

That’s another thing that has just occurred to me; the title of their track was “Blurred Lines”, I mean that in itself is a giveaway, right??

Yes, it was blurred lines because they tried to steal something, pass it off as their own (under the guise of saying they were inspired by it) and they must have thought that it would be so blurred that other people wouldn’t notice! Lol!

I think Marvin Gaye’s family were also thinking about trying to stop Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams from being able to continue to profit from their song “Blurred Lines” but, if I’m correct, they decided not to pursue that injunction because they probably realised it would stop them getting their percentage of any future revenue that it generated.

Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams now owe millions to the estate and family of Marvin Gaye, over their song “Blurred Lines”:

This is what happens when other manipulative and machiavellian people want to profit from someone else’s ideas, creativity, hard work and work ethic, then take the credit for the other persons work, get the benefits of somebody else making them look good, maybe try to use that person for their contacts, old and new, bask in the association that comes with it and profit from something that they know is and has become even more popular.

For example, a case in point would be where a creative person has said to a so-called business person who asked them to do some business together (and to which the so-called business person agreed), that it was a business transaction which needed to generate money. The creative person may have agreed to prove what they could do so that the so-called business person could start getting other sponsors on board and things like that. In the beginning, for a while, the so-called business person said they were going to do that, then they started making excuses as to why it wasn’t happening. So then, the so-called business person can see that the creative person is getting fed up and will probably stop doing the work if it continues. Once the so-called business person realises what the creative person has been doing is a going concern, plus it has become really popular and profitable, then the so-called business person decides that they don’t want to pay the creative and talented person who has been doing all that work. The so-called business person probably didn’t ever want to pay the creative person anything at all in the first place but they had to pretend they did so they could get the creative person to start doing the work that they needed them to do.

But the so-called business person definitely can’t do what the creative person does and they can’t find anyone else to do what the creative person does either; let alone find a person to do for free even a third of the work that the creative person has been doing. The so-called business person needs to keep the content or product coming their way as it’s making money. So whether it’s by trying to palm the creative person off with promises of remuneration in the future, or if that doesn’t work, trying to offer them an absolute pittance under duress, it is only because they want the creative person to keep doing all the work that’s generating revenue and also making the so-called business person look good!!

You see, when you are a greedy, selfish, lazy, lying, fake person who is desperate to be in an industry that you have no business trying to be in, because you’re not talented in any way, which is why you can’t do what you’re trying to get other people to do for free and you’re just completely shady in your business dealings - which is probably another reason why many other people have left you in the past and don’t want to work with you in any way - then, eventually, karma is definitely going to get you and you will lose out in the end, long term!!

But, getting back to Keyshia Cole and O.T. Genasis, I have to ask, do you think Keyshia Cole is being too sensitive?

As an artist, I have to say that I can see where Keyshia Cole is coming from because O.T. Genasis took her track; the entire backing track, plus the original lyrical melody and he used it.

He didn’t even chop it up, change the key, or remix it in a way that made it sound completely different or anything like that. The music and the melody from the original track is instantly recognisable and he used it, without getting her permission to do so at all.

Do you think that Keyshia Cole could have, maybe, got a bit irritated once she heard what O.T. Genasis had done with her song, then laughed it off when she realised that, ok he used it without her permission, he’s getting attention and more importantly for her, if he’s making money from it, then he owes her money?

If Keyshia Cole really decided to go after him and sue him for everything he’s made from the track so far, plus more for compensation, if he has made any money, would you feel sorry for O.T. Genasis? Or would you say he would be getting what he deserves because he shouldn’t have done it in the first place?

Apparently, O.T. Genasis fought back when Keyshia Cole allegedly had his version of her track ”Love” removed from YouTube with a copyright claim by uploading his video ”Never Knew” to Pornhub instead!

He then openly dared authorities to remove it from there as well. The music video has resurfaced on YouTube too, after having been uploaded again by other accounts.

Also, Keyshia Cole apparently deactivated her Instagram and Twitter social media accounts for a while because of the trolling she was receiving from O.T. Genasis.

Plus, O.T. Genasis has tried to irritate Keyshia Cole even more by saying that because of his version of her track being released, her original song ”Love” has been getting streamed even more recently by people who want to hear the original, whether they have heard it before or not, maybe to compare the difference if you like, (as apparently the streaming figures went up significantly in a week) but he feels he has not been credited or thanked for that either.

I think, as we say over here in the UK, O.T. Genasis is a total and utter windup merchant and he’s just doing it to have some fun; albeit at Keyshia Cole’s expense, plus get attention and it’s obviously working?!

O.T. Genasis is winding Keyshia Cole up something chronic and she just cannot let it go…Pun intended! Lol!

It’s what I like to call a greyhound moment, where greyhound dogs have just been given a slight scent of a rabbit to chase, so as soon as the trap doors open on the race course they’re off chasing after the scent; thinking they’re chasing after a rabbit and running for their lives but in reality they’re running in a race!

O.T. Genasis knew exactly what he was doing. This is the kind of publicity that money just cannot buy, it’s priceless! Keyshia Cole has just fallen right into his trap; hook, line and sinker!

In closing and I said this before, I think the real crux of this is that O.T. Genasis has not paid Keyshia Cole any money. If he wasn’t making any money before, then he most certainly will start to now and so as far as Keyshia Cole is concerned, she feels he owes her a cheque!

Keyshia Cole has really been getting annoyed because she has seen how popular his version of her original song has become. Whether it’s being viewed as a parody or not, she probably thinks that he must be starting to make some money because he’s even been performing it at other events. O.T. Genasis‘ version of the song has gone viral and everybody around the world can hear it now.

In my opinion, basically, what has been heard cannot be unheard; that genie is most definitely out of the bottle and it can’t be put back in! Lol!

So Keyshia Cole just wants some money now! Cha ching!

If Keyshia Cole doesn’t get any financial recompense from O.T. Genasis for using her song, then I think she will find a way to make him suffer, one way or another, in future!

So, the question I’m asking today is:

What do you think about this latest music industry dispute between Keyshia Cole and O.T. Genasis over him doing a parody version of one of her songs -

Is she right or should she not be so uptight because at the end of the day, eventually, he will pay?

Let me know!
