Dear You,
In Nigeria, there’s a term known as “Tumbo Tumbo,” this slang/term is often used to describe the unpredictability of life's circumstances and the reliance on luck. It's a concept familiar to many. Nobody understands this term as much as students taking WAEC ??. ?In multiple-choice questions (popularly called O.B.J.) many students resort to ‘tumbo tumbo.’ Unfortunately, when you get to the theory session, you have to show your workings and, in this situation, demanding clear problem-solving, “tumbo tumbo” does not offer a way out.
In the realm of business and professional growth, the journey to success is rarely a straight line. It's filled with twists, turns, and unforeseen challenges that often make the outcome as unpredictable as "tumbo tumbo." Many people rely heavily on "tumbo tumbo" in their career, educational growth, and life in general. More than ever, we are in an age where results are often prioritized over processes. People aspire to achievements without appreciating the necessary groundwork.
The concept of "showing your workings" may seem outdated or unnecessary, but people are gradually realizing that sustainable success demands more than superficial accomplishments we need more than pretty pictures on Instagram to reproduce results in a sustainable way.
Showing your workings can be really hard, because it means you have to be accountable to yourself and responsibly evaluate your action but consider the pioneering spirit of Thomas Edison, whose systematic approach and meticulous documentation of experiments laid the groundwork for countless innovations. His dedication to showing his workings not only refined his inventions but also paved the way for future generations of inventors. This principle underscores the vital importance of transparency and a methodical approach in achieving lasting success.
TUMBO TUMBO GOES WRONG
·???????? Lack of Direction and Purpose: Life is inherently unpredictable but relying too heavily on the "tumbo tumbo" mindset—where outcomes are left to chance—can lead to a lack of direction and purpose. Depending on luck over a structured approach may result in missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential.
·???????? Gambling with Academic Success: When a student relies on luck rather than understanding and preparation, they gamble with their academic success. The "tumbo tumbo" approach in exams is particularly detrimental.
·???????? Uninformed Professional Decisions: In the dynamic world of business and professional growth, relying on luck or random decisions can lead to uninformed choices. This lack of transparency undermines trust and makes it difficult to justify decisions, hindering recognition and reputation building.
Practical Strategies for Showing Your Workings
?? Keep Detailed Notes: Try to document each step of your process, whether you are solving problems, completing projects, or developing ideas. Use digital tools or notebooks to track progress effectively. Every little entry counts.
?? Visualize Your Work: Utilize diagrams, flowcharts, and mind maps to illustrate your process. ?This helps make complex information easier to understand and navigate.
?? Be Honest and Transparent: Share successes and challenges openly. Let the challenges you had to surmount be documented too. Let’s not only hear about the glamorous stories. This will help to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities that can benefit you and others coming after you. Don’t hide your mistakes.
?? Provide Context: Explain the problem you are solving, explain your goals, and rationale behind your decisions. Giving your work context will do much more for you because it will clarify your works’ significance and encourage others to collaborate and support you. You can make use of the different social media platforms.
?? Invite Feedback: Encourage your colleagues, mentors, and peers to share their thoughts on your process. Their insights can help you fine-tune your approach and enhance the outcomes of your work.
?? Reflect and Learn: You have to consciously ask yourself questions like: How far have I come? How well have I done those things I wanted to do? Regularly review your process and outcomes. Identify areas for improvement and apply these lessons to future projects.

As you embark on your next project or challenge, remember to share your process openly, inviting collaboration and ensuring your journey towards success is purposeful and impactful.
