First off this is Volume 25 of Tully Tuesdays, our readership has grown significantly and I’m very grateful for those of you that check in weekly to read and reach out, this is a very fun thing for me and I’m glad others find enjoyment in it as well.
Let’s address the Elephant in the room. I got smoked on Saturday 4&3. Driver, horrible, irons horrible, wedges actually kind of decent, putting horrible. I had a few chances early in the match to get a lead and did not take advantage. After pulling back to 1 down after a birdie on 10, I caught two brutal breaks on 11 and 12, a halve on 13, and at my last breath while 3 down with 5 remained I had probably my hardest hit drive of the day, that went soaring into the left hazard on the 14th hole. At that moment I let out one of the best F bombs of my life, and realized I was in some deep shit. Ended up tying 15 on 15 but I had run out of holes, and that’s how my Championship run ended in 2024. Maybe next year.
Had the pleasure yesterday of playing in the Barstool Classic at TPC Boston, it was a fantastic day. My Partner AJ and I found out we got off the waitlist on Thursday, and quickly were able to tether our schedules to go make a run. I have played in this tournament twice before, and in 2022 we had the right mojo on Qualifying day to make it to the Championship in Scottsdale. It’s a fun event, and while it costs a decent coin to play, the team makes it well worth your while.
They gave us a pretty sweet haul of gear including a GFore Hat, Jones Shoe bag, a speaker, and some additional gear.
We had our eyes on the prize from the start, and after not making a single putt of significance in my Club Championship match Saturday, I had a start that only golf can provide, making roughly 75 feet of putts on my first four putts of the day. With a Shotgun start on 14, we had a Turkey right out of the gate followed up by a sandy for a 4-3 on 17. We knew we were in for some trouble when we didn’t birdie the gettable 18th hole, knowing that was the tie breaker if we were on the cutline.
The 1st tee they have you select a walk up song for your drive, and that was pretty cool, easy pick. Should’ve Been a Cowboy. Shoutout TK. RIP
We kept it rolling until a team bogey on the 4th hole, a short reachable par 4 where I played a little too aggressively and my partner in turn played it too conservatively. We rallied back with a net birdie and 2 straight gross birdies. We knew on our 17th hole we probably needed to drop 2 more shots to get in. After two toasted tee balls both of us ended up making 5 on the Par 5 12th and set us up for a final hole needed a 2 net one to get inside the cutline. My drive was in the rough in a not so great lie, AJ had split the fairway and hit his approach perfectly, so much so that our playing partner insisted it was inside of 8 feet. It rolled down off the shelf the pin was on to about 20, where a valiant attempt at birdie left him a nervy 4 footer to give us a chance. He buried it, and while that provided a moment of elation, watching the scoreboard online showed us we were just out of range.
All and all, TPC Boston is a treat. The Greens were the best I’ve seen this year, fairways were pristine, and Barstool put on a hell of a show. I had some fun 2 days after a devasting loss in a year I had convinced myself belonged to me. There’s a lot of good things, but there’s few things like Golf to get your mind right.
