Google Drive has added the ability to lock files. Locking files can be a quicker way of protecting a file from accidental editing. I say accidental because if a user has edit access to the file, they can unlock it, but at least they would get a warning for doing so. To lock a file, right click on the file in Google Drive and select File Information. Then, click on Lock.

Once locked, edits, comments, and suggestions cannot be added to the document.
