Tuesday Tales: The Power of Mentorship in Building a Progressive Career

Recently, I had the honor of being a guest speaker at an event organized by the Triumphant Professionals Lagos, led by Tunji Babajide , CEO, Awesome Effect Consulting. The topic of discussion was Building a Progressive Career, and amidst the various career stories I shared, one stood out as particularly impactful. Today, I want to share the fuller story here and extract some valuable lessons and actionable points.

It was back in 1995 when I first encountered the concept of mentoring as a fresh university graduate. I was fortunate enough to secure a job with a consulting firm that specialized in establishing business libraries for banks and non-banking financial institutions. Being a student of "Library, Archival, and Information Studies," my passion for books naturally thrived. It was during this time that I discovered the power of mentoring, and I chose Stephen R. Covey, the late author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," as my mentor by proxy. Covey's influence in the realm of personal development and leadership was immense.

Since then, I have been blessed with mentors at critical junctures in my career, and their guidance has been instrumental in my growth and success.

At the event, I shared a specific instance when I took the initiative to approach two senior executives in my former organization to become my mentors. This happened when I was promoted to head the Training Academy of the institution. Recognizing the importance of senior executives' support for my new role, I selected these two gentlemen based on their exceptional performance, passion, and deep interest in learning and development.

The impact of their constant counsel, guidance, and background support cannot be overstated. Their mentorship greatly contributed to the success I achieved in that position. Moreover, my relationship with them provided me with valuable insights into the direction of the business per time, allowing me to proactively position the Academy to offer relevant learning interventions that effectively supported the organization. It also gave me direct feedback from senior executives regarding the Academy's performance, enabling us to make necessary adjustments and improvements.

From this story, there are several key lessons and actionable points that I want to highlight:

Recognizing the power of mentoring: Mentors can play a pivotal role in your personal and professional development. Seek out individuals who have achieved success in areas that align with your aspirations and values.

Be proactive in seeking mentorship: Don't wait for someone to approach you. Take the initiative to approach potential mentors who can guide you on your journey.

Choose mentors strategically: Select mentors based on their expertise, track record, and shared interests. Look for individuals who can offer valuable insights and support in areas directly relevant to your goals.

Foster genuine relationships: Build relationships with your mentors based on mutual respect, trust, and shared values. Cultivate a connection that goes beyond professional guidance and extends into meaningful interactions.

Leverage mentorship for success: Actively seek guidance and advice from your mentors. Utilize their expertise to gain valuable insights and perspectives that can propel your career forward.

Give back and pay it forward: As you progress in your career, remember the impact your mentors had on your success. Consider becoming a mentor yourself and offer support to others who may benefit from your knowledge and experience.

Remember, it's not just the titles or positions you hold that matter in the long run; it's the quality of relationships you build and the positive impact you contribute that truly define your professional journey.

Gratitude Note:
