Dr Kevin Maloney 7/25 Corona Virus update Regarding Seeing patients in-office

Tuesday, July 21 Corona Virus update: recommendations:

There are two schools of “thought" concerning this virus that land on the opposite ends of a spectrum. There’s a reason we all know the expression “better safe than sorry“.

There is no consensus of opinion regarding treating this virus. There is no consensus of opinion regarding the seriousness of this virus now. Practice social distancing, don’t practice social distancing, wear a mask don’t wear a mask… While other countries seem to have adopted the better safe than sorry philosophy, many Americans have chosen not to, because of the freedoms afforded to us in America and our right to make out own decisions: social distancing and the wearing of masks. Who’s right? We don’t know for sure is the answer ,which is why we are told different things by different people in the media. We no longer know who or what to believe so we have to make decisions ourselves using our common sense. And on top of all this, we have two political parties completely disagreeing as to what to do concerning a “medical issue” which has, according to statistics, killed almost 150,000 Americans in just a few months. Today 142,000 deaths. We’ve become immune to numbers. Think of it when you see that 47 people in the state died today. It’s like no big deal right? Everything is relative: thousands were dying per day at one time. We are all living in what we feel is the twilight zone. The world has completely changed, but for a reason, and don’t forget that. Don’t underestimate the numbers. Practice in your head using your common sense, “better safe than sorry”, and train yourself to accept and respect those that have a right to their opinion also, if they choose not to wear masks practice social distancing… They have a right to do so, and in fact are being recommended to do so by authoritative figures. Let’s all stop fighting and respect one another, otherwise it just creates more chaos and increases risk factors. The other countries throughout the world must be looking at us and saying what idiots, … What’s wrong with them.

All of my patients , with few exceptions, as I have spoken to many every single day seven days a week, are practicing the "better safe than sorry" method. I always say and I mean it “I have the best patients in the world “, open minded and intelligent, and in my practice I have a very low morbidity, hospitalization and especially mortality rate.

I’m sure there are those who are saying oh Dr. Maloney is afraid to be in his office seeing all of his patients because he doesn’t want to get sick. Anybody that knows me, knows that anybody who would say that does not know me whatsoever. I’m just the opposite. Those who know me know that I regularly participate in swim races in the Hudson Harbor, around the Statue of Liberty, around Governors Island, 6 mile swim races in the Hudson in the middle of Manhattan in waters that so many others are afraid to swim in. I’ve heard for years "are you afraid you’re going to come down with something swimming in those waters ?" and the answer is no. I am strong and healthy and not worried about myself getting sick at all. Those who know me know that I am presently swimming in open waters on a daily basis, miles a day, in waters that others would not dare enter.

It is for the safety of my patients, only, without regard to myself whatsoever, that I am practicing telemedicine, the restrictions of which have been lifted on an emergency basis so the doctors like me will use it to lower the numbers of people going to healthcare facilities , where you are more likely to be exposed and get sick from this coronavirus, and I will continue to do so until these restrictions are lifted. Telemedicine restrictions have been lifted for a reason. They want you to use telemedicine to see your doctor. The government lifted so many restrictions that you don’t even have to video conference with me, you can simply talk to me on the phone and I have made myself available 24 seven for the last five months and I have not a day off in five months. I’m not complaining with all that’s going on, but I want you to know that if I had a choice without regards to the health of all of my patients, I’d be in my office. This is the twilight zone. I have to think what month it is at times, and I swear to God at times what season it is, not being in my office practicing telemedicine 24 seven, social distancing, wearing a mask… We all feel the same, but we must use our common sense and again respect those who think differently than us and realize there is no right answer that has been proven by scientific fact. This is all based on opinion.

So let's all do our best, but most importantly respect all others during these turbulent times.

Dr. Maloney, Thank you for your post. Your common sense approach will help those who are willing to listen. You are a compassionate, giving doctor, who does more for his patients and those in need then most people are even willing to consider. God bless you, Peter Anderson
