Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link Tunnel Breakthrough Ceremony

Today, we joined senior executives of the Highways Department for the Hong Kong Government and Dragages-Bouygues Joint Venture, to witness the exciting simultaneous breakthrough of two tunnel boring machines (TBM) - each measuring 14 meters in diameter- which marked the completion of Hong Kong’s longest and deepest sub-sea road tunnel boring works at the #TuenMun-ChekLapKokLink (TM-CLKL). The #TM-CLKL total route length is 9km. It’ll be an alternate strategic route to #HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and #BoundaryCrossingFacilities, as well as #HongKongInternationalAirport. When TM-CLKL is fully commissioned, not only road time between Tuen Mun South and the Airport will be cut from 30 to just 10 minutes, it will enhance #HongKong’s connectivity to the rest of the Greater Bay Area and participation in the economic development of this region, opening up more opportunities to some 70 million people. Equally inspiring is the environmental commitment which led to the use of the world’s largest TBMs for the first time in Hong Kong in order to reduce dredging and minimize the impacts on the marine habitat, home of White Dolphins.

TM-CLKL is an extremely complex project posing a diversity of challenges for the #AECOM project team, including varying ground conditions, environmental protection, health and safety of workers going deep underwater, safeguarding undersea power cables supplying the airport, as well as avoiding disruption to Hong Kong’s busiest water channel for marine traffic. We’re very proud of the team’s use of state-of-the-art technologies and innovations to address all these successfully. Significantly, there were no major accidents or incidents during the whole tunnel boring process. I look forward to the project’s full completion in 2020.
