Tube to Tube Sheet Welder Qualification

Introduction

This article outlines the requirements for qualifying welders and welding operators for tube to tube sheet welding, as per the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX.

Qualification Tests

If specific qualification tests are not required by the applicable code section, welders and welding operators shall be qualified using one of the following methods:

  1. Demonstration Mockup QW-193.2
  2. Groove Weld Qualification QW-303.1

If specific requirement of mock-up assembly in design code then follow QW-193.2

Mockup Requirements QW-193.2

  1. The qualification assembly shall be duplicated to tube to tubesheet weld joint as to be used in production
  2. Five Mock Tube Required for Welder Qualification and one mockup tube required for welder renewable
  3. PWHT may be omitted
  4. Minimum thickness 50mm required of tubesheet than welder Qualify any thickness of tube sheet if he can weld below 50mm thickness than he qualify given thickness and lesser

Required Testings

  • Visual Examination
  • LPT
  • Macro testing

Visual Examination

ACCEPTABLE STANDARD

  • No porosity, Cracks and Burn through and complete Fusion

Liquid Penetrant Testing

ACCEPTABLE STANDARD

  • Relevant linear indication
  • Rounded indication greater than 5mm
  • Four rounded indication in line separated by 1.5mm or lesser

Macro Testing shall be done by 10x to 20x

ACCEPTABLE STANDARD

  • No cracking
  • Complete Fusion
  • Minimum leak path according to design code

Additional Essential Variables and Range of Qualification

  • QW 403.16.? Tube diameter 10% increase or decrease
  • QW403.32? ? Tube thickness 1/2T to to 2T
  • QW 402.31 ? Ligament decrease 10% and increase no limits
  • QW 409.10? ? +10% and -10% in current parameters
  • QW402.32 ? ? Joint Type Any
