TTIC’s Path to Leadership in AI Security and Compliance: Notes on Aligning with Federal Directives for Ethical Innovation

TTIC’s Path to Leadership in AI Security and Compliance: Notes on Aligning with Federal Directives for Ethical Innovation

The White House memorandum on advancing AI for national security and safety has several practical implications for TTIC members, especially given TTIC’s focus on healthcare IT, security, and ethical AI standards. Here’s how this directive translates into actionable insights for TTIC:

  1. Advocacy for Standards Adoption in Healthcare IT: The memorandum amplifies the importance of AI standards that protect against risks while fostering innovation. For TTIC members, particularly those involved in the IEEE UL 2933 standard, this highlights a growing national interest in trusted frameworks. Healthcare organizations aligned with TTIC should prioritize adopting and advocating for these standards, which help ensure interoperability, data protection, and consistent, secure AI applications across healthcare settings.
  2. Partnerships and Government Collaboration: The memorandum opens doors for collaborations between industry leaders and government agencies, aiming to build trusted AI solutions. TTIC members could benefit by positioning themselves as key stakeholders in this space, fostering partnerships that align with government directives on data security, ethical governance, and regulatory compliance in AI. This also offers a route for TTIC members to influence policy development, as the administration is looking to industry for practical implementations of these directives.
  3. Enhanced Security and Privacy Requirements for Healthcare: With security and data privacy at the forefront of the memorandum, TTIC members should anticipate stricter security compliance needs in healthcare AI deployments. By aligning their technologies with frameworks like OWASP’s LLM Top 10, members can mitigate potential risks associated with large language models (LLMs) and AI applications in clinical settings. For TTIC members, prioritizing data encryption, anonymization, and secure development processes will ensure their solutions meet or exceed these evolving federal requirements.
  4. Expanding AI Governance and Auditing Processes: To fulfill the memorandum’s goals, TTIC members may need to consider additional governance and auditing mechanisms to assess AI ethics, bias, and security continuously. This could include building AI fairness and transparency audits into development cycles, particularly for applications that impact patient care. TTIC’s advisory capacity can help our team's healthcare systems implement these governance processes, allowing members to lead in a compliance-first approach that resonates with federal goals.
  5. Alignment with National Security Goals: Although TTIC’s primary focus is healthcare IT, the emphasis on AI’s role in national security means that organizations affiliated with TTIC can play a part in larger, systemic initiatives by ensuring the integrity and reliability of healthcare-critical systems. This may involve collaborations on dual-purpose technologies, like identity management and data protection, which serve both healthcare and broader national security applications.
  6. Funding and Strategic Positioning for AI Research: As the government focuses on “AI innovation and national security,” TTIC members could potentially access funding or incentives to accelerate research and development. By aligning with these national priorities, members can strategically position their innovations to qualify for grants or partnerships with public agencies committed to advancing ethical and secure AI in critical infrastructure, including healthcare.

TTIC’s mission, focused on ethical governance and secure AI, aligns well with the directive’s call for responsible leadership in AI. By integrating these practical steps, TTIC members can further their influence and readiness, not just within healthcare but in supporting wider national goals. This alignment also positions TTIC as a preferred partner for healthcare organizations aiming to meet government expectations, bridging the gap between innovation and regulatory compliance.

Awesome..thanks for the update Sherri Douville

This is not only a National Security issue - - which is about as big as it gets, in healthcare it could really be a matter of life or death. It must be managed and controlled. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/mother-sues-ai-chatbot-company-characterai-google-over-sons-suicide/ar-AA1sOnHV?ocid=BingNewsSerp
