● ATHLETICS: Staggering, fantastic, unbelievable 2:09:56 WOMEN's world record for 2019 World Champion Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya in Chicago! It’s the first time a women has run under 2:10 and she shattered the existing mark of 2:11:53 (pictured above; World Marathon Majors photo). ● Paris 2024: Did Celine Dion actually sing at the Olympic opening? A Paris newspaper quoted?experts who say no. The Paris 2024 organizers said after the ceremony she did. Both could be right.
? The tons of sports and technical equipment from the 2024 Olympic Games is being redistributed throughout France, to clubs, schools and other organizations, to ensure as little waste as possible.
● Ethiopia: Reports from Ethiopia say a lawsuit was filed against the Ethiopian Olympic Committee and four officers, alleging human trafficking and election fraud. The Ethiopian government is said to be investigating.
● India: More trouble at the Indian Olympic Association, where a football federation official is apparently masquerading as the IOA chief executive! The International Olympic Committee has cut off Olympic Solidarity funds from India, which total about $1 million U.S. per year!
● Athletics: In the aftermath of former Huntington University cross country and track coach Nick Johnson being found guilty of sexual assault last month, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has placed the school on probation through the 2026-27 academic year and banned the cross-country teams from competing at the 2024 nationals.?
● Badminton: China won three events at the BWF world Tour’s Arctic Open in Finland.

● Boxing: Irish boxing clubs called a special meeting of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) and voted, 73-40, to remove any mention of affiliation to the International Boxing Association in its constitution. This is seen as a step toward joining World Boxing in order to preserve boxing’s place on the 2028 Olympic program.
● Canoe-Kayak: The International Canoe Federation held a unique ICF Super Cup in China, with four disciplines competing together. Multiple Olympic medalists were there, but Italy’s Slalom men’s K-1 gold medalist Giovanni de Gennaro was the only Paris victor to win.
● Cycling: The amazing Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia won his fourth Il Lombardia title in a row at the 118th running of the race on Sunday. He broke away with more than 40 km left and was never headed. So, in 2024, he won the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, the World Road Championships and now this.
? Belgian star Lotte Kopecky won the final stage of the six-race Simac Ladies Tour in the Netherlands, but it was the final stage on Sunday and she won the overall race title by just two seconds over German Franziska Koch.?
● Football: The U.S. men’s National Team won its opener for new coach Mauricio Pochettino on Saturday, 2-0, over Panama, in Austin, Texas, with goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi. Next up is Mexico, in Guadalajara, on Tuesday.?
● Judo: Five Russian winners at the IJF World Tour Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in the UAE. The IJF now allows Russian and Belarusian fighters to compete as “IJF” athletes and not as neutrals.
● Swimming: Upsets at the World Aquatics Open Water World Cup in Setubal, Portugal, as Italy’s Marcello Guidi won the men’s race at the head of an Italian sweep, and German Lea Boy got her first Open Water World Cup win in the women’s 10 km race.?
● Water Polo: Tragic news for two-time Olympic women’s gold medalist Maddie Musselman, as husband Pat Woepse died from a very rare form of lung cancer last Thursday. ?
