TSN over 5G - Time Synchronization
Just before MWC2023 a joint Belden team with members of Hirschmann Automation and Controll as well as NetModule AG achieved time synchronization according to IEEE 802.1AS over 5G in the range of Nano-Seconds.
While existing core networks in public and private networks do not yet support the time translater functions, nor Ethernet PDU the proof of concept uses two NB1800 industrial devices with a Release 16 modem Telit FN990 over the air. It could be demonstrated that with SIB9 time information a clock synchronization in the range of nano-seconds are achieved Without SIB9 only milliseconds were recorded.
The next step towards TSN over 5G respectively Profinet over 5G are improvements of the residence time or in other word shorter latency which is a fundamental promise of 5G. It is our understanding that this can only be achieved in private 5G networks where the slot format can be optimized for automation purpose.

1 年Nice work! Was there ever a paper publish for it?

1 年Impressive! For achieving that, how precise is the time sync been the UPF and gNB? I am also interested to see the sync accuracy when the the UE and gNB are tens of hundreds of meters away from each other, and with the wireless channel of rich paths.
