Trying to tell the story of your business? Here are my Top 10 Podcast Episodes!

It’s hard to stay up with marketing trends. You start to implement a Periscope strategy and the market zigs. You start to do Snapchat for your company and the market zags. While storytelling and video are hot right now, they will never go out of style. Why?

Our brains are hardwired to think, remember, and be sold by stories.

Video, properly created, makes some of the best stories.

As CEO of authenticWEB, a video marketing agency helping service businesses for almost 10 years, I have helped hundreds of businesses find and share their stories.

There is a simple recipe to make stories that move your marketing.

Know whom you want to tell the story. Determine what you want that person to do after they know your story. Collect the right story. Craft the story based on where that story will be told.

I always want to know the latest, greatest, and best techniques for collecting, crafting, and delivering stories to create UNSTOPPABLE businesses

To do this, I reach out to other experts and find out their secrets. My goal with The Garlic Marketing Show is to seek out the stories and secrets and bring them directly to you.

Podcasts can keep you at the top of your business and marketing game. The best part is podcasts can be utilized in your down time.

To best utilize podcasts, you must know what you are trying to accomplish and remember specific action items from each show. I aim to make this super simple when you listen to experts like:

All of my guests gave incredible ninja-like tips you can implement today. I have gone through and found you the absolute best of business storytelling.

My Top 10 Video and Storytelling Episodes

1.  The Neuroscience of Story and Video to Influence Decisions with Paul Zak

Paul Zak’s research proves the power of video storytelling through science. His work brings a whole new level of insight to marketing and neuroscience. His studies also correlate the importance of trust in any organization and its success. Paul’s books and research are phenomenal for any marketer.

I was lucky enough to have him as a guest on the Garlic Marketing Show! Listen to one of my favorite guests and absolute favorite episodes. There are many great takeaways on crafting a great story that sells and building a company of trust, the number one indicator of growth.

2.  How to Use Story As Your Guiding Star in Your Business with Eliot Wagonheim

Eliot’s a two-time guest and when you listen to this you will know why. A rock star business advisor and lawyer, Eliot talks about his new podcast. He gives examples of how companies grow by building teams, and efforts using their stories.

Your stories, if properly collected and crafted can make your business growth a hell of a lot easier.

3  How to Collect the Perfect Video Case Story

You don’t want to ask for testimonials or reviews. You want video case stories. They will sell better. They will help you stand out. Case stories will help you grow your business. I’ve been creating these for almost a decade. A great video case story will increase the performance of ANY online marketing campaign. In this episode, I tell you how to craft the PERFECT one for your campaign.

4. How to Use Storytelling in Your Pitch with John Livesay

John Livesay helps startups craft their pitch and get funding. The key to this is a great story! On this episode of The Garlic Marketing Show, John gives us the secrets of how to craft those stories. Every business, every startup, and every salesperson need a pitch, and every pitch should have a story!

5. The Big Mistakes Companies Make in Storytelling with Pamela Herrmann

Pamela Herrmann joins me in this episode. She is Chief Storyteller at Create Buzz, a marketing genius and all around great person. We discuss writing a brand story that resonates like Toy Story and other Pixar movies. While I’m not a fan of the word “branding” for most companies, your brand story is a critical story for developing a tribe and keeping them close.

6.  How to Tell a Story with Portrait Photos with John DeMato

This episode is a must if you have less than remarkable photos in your marketing. Even if your photos are good, John DeMato’s genius will show you how to make them great.

Being a video marketing expert I should tell you to do video first. I will if, you don’t have awesome photos. Too many businesses underestimate the importance of great photography as a storytelling tool on their website. (Even looking at ours, it’s good, but could tell a better story). If you are in a service business, you should get photos before a logo or even business cards. To be honest, logos and business cards should come 12 months down the road.

If your service is software, especially b2b software, photos of your team are crucial. When I have trouble with the software, I want to know who is on the other side helping me.

John DeMato takes his video production experience and entrepreneurship and makes incredible storytelling photography for your business. Despite having worked with many great photography companies, I learned a ton from John. I know you will too!

7. How to Use Your Customer Stories to Build a Brand with Tim Croll

In building your brand, your customer’s stories are THE MOST IMPORTANT story. Livnfresh, a Michigan based

T-Shirt Brand excels at doing that. Led by my great friend, Tim Croll, this clothing brand finds and harnesses their customer’s stories to build a tribe. Any business can take cues from what Tim and his team are doing.

We even helped Tim create a video of his customer’s stories! https://youtu.be/U4ScYNUzu0w

Tim Croll’s business leadership skills are amazing. He wields fantastic online marketing skills. I loved having Tim over to my house to hang out, go fishing and talk business.

Pay attention to Tim and the LivnFresh T-Shirt Brand. They are going to go a long way!

8. The Right Story at the Right Time

Everything in life is timing. The world of business teems with stories of “almost there” and second place just because of market timing.

Only 4% of your prospects are ready to buy right now.  50% of them are preparing to buy. How do you stand out in all of the internet marketing noise and make sure they remember your company?

You can bombard your prospects with commercials and ads, spending millions on branding. Or you can decide…

  • Who you want to talk to?
  • What you want them to do?
  • What story do they need to hear?

The company that tells the right story at the right time will always win.

On this episode, I will tell you exactly how to do that.

9. Telling The Right Story at the Right Time using Video Ads with Tom Breeze

Tom Breeze is a YouTube ads genius. Not only is he great at executing them for big business, Tom has taught small businesses IN TWO HOURS to get a 7 to 1 return on YouTube ads.

YouTube is the number 2 most used search engine. People there are primed for the right story. Tom tells you exactly how to get that story in front of them.

WARNING: There are some points where Tom and I nerd out on neuroscience and marketing psychology.

10. How Gary V Built a $250 Million Company Using Storytelling with Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vee is one of the greats in marketing. He’s built two multi-million dollar companies, invested in many of the hottest startups out there, and is the go to social media guru.

Gary Vaynerchuk works hard and he works smart. I interviewed him on how he uses a story to build his business from the outside and the inside. You can’t argue with his meteoric success.

BONUS AWESOME EPISODE Embracing Your Story with Tony Grebmeier

Tony Grebmeier is a close personal friend. He runs ShipOffers, an INC500 company he runs with his two childhood friends.

Tony almost lost it all: his business, his wife, and his life before turning it around and making it awesome. What draws Tony and me together the most is helping businesses grow (and the fact that we are both over 6’5”). Tony’s story exemplifies how to turn it around, how to focus, and the attitude it takes to make business and life awesome.

This is a great example of the “Guiding Star Story” discussed with Eliot Wagonheim in the second episode on this list.
