Try it yourself first, succeed, and then give advice.

Generally, I have always been the kind of person who only gives advice after I’ve personally done something and succeeded in it. I don’t accept what others say until I’ve done it myself and seen the results.

So, after I completed my A/Ls and O/Ls and entered the University of Moratuwa to study Software Engineering for four years, I started giving advice to others only when I started seeing the benefits and results from that experience. I advised others to definitely pursue a good BSc degree, especially in a free government university. I said this because I experienced the benefits firsthand, and it’s valuable for the future, as it saves money in the long run.

However, I didn’t talk about or give advice on other universities because I hadn’t personally experienced them, whether good or bad. People who have pursued degrees through other pathways are the ones who should give advice on those. It’s clear, isn’t it?

During my time at university, in the third year, internships are mandatory for almost all degrees at Moratuwa (for a minimum of six months), and it’s still the same today. Around 2015-2016, I worked at Virtusa in the R&D team on a project called the SPEED Cloud Platform, using Java and many related technologies. I developed an Eclipse plugin to generate code—a drag-and-drop tool inside the Eclipse IDE. From that experience, I learned that it’s crucial to do an internship, especially if you’re working in the IT industry. I advise doing it while you’re still at university because the boost I got from the Virtusa internship was invaluable in shaping my future as a software engineer. I gave this advice because I had gone through it myself and knew its value.

After that, during the fourth year of university, at the time of the University Career Fairs, I landed my first job at IFS R&D as a Software Engineer. I see IFS as the foundation that helped me reach where I am today. When I say that, I don’t only mean from a technical perspective but also in terms of how to navigate a career in the global IT industry. I learned how to work with people, take on challenges, solve problems, and humbly ask others about things I didn’t know. These are the key skills I developed, because, without them, it’s hard to stay in this field, no matter how good your technical skills are. After that, I started advising everyone to aim for their first job at a good IT firm, not to become CEOs of small businesses right after graduating or to create basic software for shops and supermarkets right away (I’m not discouraging self-study here). You at least need to know the basics and be aware of what you don’t know. That’s why I said, get your first job right in the IT field. Those first two years of work were crucial in giving me the push I needed to lift my head up career-wise and financially. I’ve advised people to do the same, based on my own success.

Then, I started advising people to do part-time freelancing as software engineers while working full-time. I said this because I had reached the Top-Rated Plus level on Upwork, working with over 50+ global brands and IT firms, through freelancing. The number of projects I gained through freelancing has led me to the point where I now have a small team working for me. I charge a fixed price and ensure I make a profit. As a software engineer, freelancing part-time has taken my life to the next level (although I can’t predict when things might fall apart, I’ve still managed to do it and keep going). That’s why I advise everyone to start freelancing part-time if they’re software engineers. It’s a goldmine for software engineers—those who know, know. I’ve given this advice because I’ve done it and seen success.

Afterward, I explored remote software engineering opportunities outside of Sri Lanka and found an opportunity at KodeKloud, where I now work full-time as a Lead DevOps & Cloud Engineer, fully remotely. One of my biggest achievements is landing this role at KodeKloud. I now give advice and positive feedback to others about joining foreign software firms from Sri Lanka and the higher exposure to different tech areas . Why? Because I’ve done it, and I’m experiencing the benefits firsthand. It’s clear, right? I’m advising because I’ve done it and achieved success.

Then, about a year ago, I realized I didn’t know much about YouTube. I didn’t know if posting videos on YouTube was actually beneficial or if it was a stable way to earn financially. Therefore, I couldn’t tell anyone to start a YouTube channel, because I hadn’t done it or seen the results myself. So, I didn’t give anyone advice on whether it’s good or bad.

But a year ago, I started the Life Captured YouTube channel. I started it to capture important moments in my life. The reason was that there are a few people close to me who I know won’t be around forever. So, while I’m still here, I wanted to make sure they can see me in a live video format. That’s why I created the channel. But at the same time, I thought this could be an opportunity to find out the truths and myths about YouTube—what’s good and bad.

So now I can say that doing YouTube is worth it, and there are financial benefits too. Yes, dollars come in based on the quality, value, and engagement of your videos. More than just financially, you build an amazing brand name for yourself. Even if you make videos in Sinhala, as long as you’re doing them right in the software industry space, people from abroad will watch and offer you promotions.

Let me give you an example: I recently got an offer from the team behind VKube (a Kubernetes-based decentralized platform) to do paid promotions because of my Kubernetes playlist and infographics/illustrations.

So, if you’re a software engineer, you should definitely start YouTube. I’m saying this now because I’ve done it, and I’ve seen the results. So now I can confidently recommend it to others.

I could add many more things to this list, but there’s no time now. Bottom line is, you should always speak from your own experience. And if someone else can do it, you can too, as long as you’re breathing. You just need to create a method that suits your circumstances—there’s nothing that can’t be done.
