Try This in Your Next Disagreement at Work

You’ve explained it repeatedly, but you might as well be talking to a wall. You’re starting to feel like you’re not even speaking the same language. It's true: Differences in thinking preferences can create separate and distinct “languages” or dialects.?

The next time you feel stuck in a conversation at work, try a little Whole Brain? Thinking to break the stalemate. Adjust your messaging to better fit the thinking preference of the person you're in conflict with instead of doubling down on your own. Remember:

  • Analytical (Blue) thinkers value facts. People with this strong preference expect you to know your stuff and have the data and research to back up your ideas.
  • Practical (Green) thinkers value form and structure. Walk them through what you’re doing so they can understand it in more of a step-by-step, linear fashion.
  • Relational (Red) thinkers value feelings. They’re looking for authenticity, expressive communication, genuineness, support, and collaboration.
  • Experimental (Yellow) thinkers value flexibility. These thinkers are looking for the “why.” Give them context, and be prepared to explore ideas with a strategic, future-focused perspective.
