Try stuff and see what happens

Try stuff and see what happens

I recently stumbled on a great idea for people who are out of work or between jobs.

Basically, it’s that you try to start your own company and use the process of doing so to get hired.

Best case scenario: you start a company and it works.

Worst case scenario: you try to start a company, it doesn’t work, but you build an incredibly strong portfolio and/or network in the process.

At the end of the day, the goal is the same: get someone to pay you to do work for them.

It doesn’t matter whether they pay you as an employee or as a consultant.

You still have to get them to choose you and agree to pay you.

Running a business is essentially just getting really good at getting people to hire you over and over.

I love this approach because it invites experimentation.

It requires you to be unattached from the result.

It gets you into action.

It allows you to practice putting yourself out there and handling rejection.

So why not try it?

My experience is that people usually want guarantees that something will work before they take action toward it.

They mistakenly believe that it’s a waste of time to do something if it doesn’t yield immediate, predictable results.

They want to believe that life is linear, when it is not.

One of my favorite thought leaders is Paul Millerd, the author of The Pathless Path.

He’s always been a huge proponent for randomly trying things.

I’ll confess that I’m a believer.

But it requires us to put down our perfectionism.

To step outside of “analysis paralysis” and into action.

If I posted a graphic on Instagram that says something like “Fail Quickly,” a bunch of people would like it.

But then they’d do everything in their power to avoid failing.

I’m not saying to be reckless or to throw caution to the wind.

I’m suggesting that you simply try to start a company and see what happens.

And use the process to either get hired or successfully start your own business.

It’s straightforward and simple.

And it’s totally possible.

But it may require you to unsubscribe from a bunch of outdated norms / expectations about how the world / your life / careers work.

If you’re still under the false assumption that life / careers should be linear, then you’ll need to let go of that.

If you’re paralyzed by fear because you’ve had your self confidence crushed by the corporate machine, then you’ll need to reconnect with who you are and what your true value is.

But never doubt whether it’s possible.

It is.

You can do this.

And I will literally die on that hill reminding you of it.
