There is No Try, Only Do: The Power of Commitment in Fractional Work
Master Yoda's wisdom resonates deeply in the world of Fractional work. “Do or do not. There is no try.” These words aren’t just for Jedi trainees—they’re for anyone standing on the edge of change, unsure whether to dip their toes or dive in.
If you’re looking at the Fractional path, you may feel the urge to try it, test it, or see how it goes. You’re careful. Cautious. Raw. That’s completely natural. Many who come to Fractional work have been laid off, pushed out, or burned out. These experiences leave us tender and uncertain—wounds of self-confidence, self-worth, and trust still healing.
But here’s what I’ve learned: When you are raw is when you need commitment the most.
Why Try is Not Enough
Corporate life conditions us to be cautious. We’re rewarded for incremental thinking: test it, analyze it, wait for permission, then maybe act. We get used to dipping our toes instead of diving in.
But Fractional work? Fractional work is about ownership, not permission. It's about stepping fully into your expertise, your value, and your worth. You don’t try to help your clients; you help them. You don’t try to solve problems; you solve them. You do.
The moment you say “I’ll try Fractional” is the moment you give yourself an out. It’s subtle. It’s quiet. But it’s there, allowing fear to creep in and whisper: “If this doesn’t work, I can always go back.”
Let me ask you something: Isn’t that whisper what’s really holding you back?
Heal, Then Commit
If you’re feeling raw, the first step is to honor it. Don’t ignore your wounds. Healing takes courage and intention. Commit to healing your confidence. Commit to believing in yourself. Commit to acknowledging your fear but moving through it anyway.
This isn’t about being reckless—it’s about being brave. Once you begin to heal, it’s time to commit to your new path fully. Not halfway. Not with one foot still in the safety of what was. Fully.
What Does “Fully Committed” Look Like?
1. Make the Decision: Declare to yourself, “I am doing this. I am a Fractional professional.” Not trying. Doing.
2. Show Up Daily: Every day, take action toward building your Fractional business. Even if it’s small. Even if it’s uncomfortable.
3. Invest in Yourself: Time, learning, connections, mentors—this is a real business, and it requires real investment.
4. Believe in Your Value: You bring decades of experience and insight. You don’t need to prove yourself—you need to step into yourself.
5. Leave the Safety Net Behind: Safety nets can hold us back. Let go of the "what if" and embrace what is.
Fractional Work Isn’t About Half-Stepping
You may be transitioning to part-time or project-based work, but the commitment to yourself, your value, and your clients must be 100%. Fractional professionals don’t test their way into success. They choose it, fully and completely.

This is about reclaiming your independence and stepping into a career where you control your time, energy, and impact. Freedom doesn’t come from trying—it comes from doing.
Stop Waiting for the Fear to Go Away
Fear doesn’t disappear before you act. You act, and fear fades as you build momentum. The fastest way to prove to yourself that you can do this is to start doing it.
The clients will come. The confidence will build. The path will become clear. But none of that happens if you wait on the shore, testing the water. You have to jump.
A Final Word from Yoda
When I see someone say they’ll try Fractional work, I think of Yoda. And I gently want to say, “There is no try, only do.”
So here’s my challenge to you this week:
Decide. Commit. Do.
Fractional work isn’t a test. It’s your path. And it’s waiting for you to show up fully.
Four Things You Can Do Right Now to Commit
1. Take the Leap with Our Masters Course: Our next Fractional Accelerator? course begins January 9th. It’s designed to give you the tools, confidence, and community to succeed as a Fractional professional. [**Reserve your spot now.**](https://voyageur-university.com)
2. Join Fractionals United: Surround yourself with others on this path. Engage in the conversation, share your challenges, and learn from those who are already doing it. Fractional work doesn’t have to be lonely—this community has your back. Here you go: https://www.fractionalsunited.com. Say hello to Karina Mikhli !
3. Find a Networking Event This Week: Show up, listen, and observe. Don’t pitch. Just listen to what people need. You’ll be surprised how much clarity and confidence you gain simply by being present and hearing others' challenges.
4. Tune into The Corporate Escapee by Brett Trainor here: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/the-corporate-escapee-on-a-mis-880262
Your commitment starts with action. Pick one, or do all three. What matters most is that you move forward. Do.
You’ve got this. I’m cheering for you.
