The try before you CD technique...

Quite often teams become Creative Directors overnight.

Promoted into the job after being great creatives.

The transition can be tough.

Compromising your own work to help others thrive.

Directing rather than dictating.

Giving rather than owning.

More often than not one of the team doesn’t enjoy it and would rather still be a creative.

But sadly by then it might be too late and the team tends to split due to a change in career ambitions.

Meaning the industry loses a star team.

The School of Communication Arts 2.0?have always welcomed creatives to come in and mentor students when they can.

There are many reasons why this has thrived over the years, but one of the best ones is it gives creative teams who might want to Creative Direct one day a chance to try it out whilst they are still creatives.

By doing so they can make sure they love it before their boss gives them the gig, ensuring they stay together and continue to thrive.

Alternatively they might have decided after mentoring that one of them wants to be a Creative Director but the other wants to carry on creating and this can be proposed to their boss to keep everyone happy.

I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the faculty at the School for over four years now and can honestly say it’s been the most rewarding time of my professional life.

Everyday is a source of inspirational collective creating and I quite often learn more from the students and the talks than I end up teaching.

So if you’ve got the itch to creative direct and fancy giving it a go as a mentor please email [email protected] and she’ll book you in.

Thanks in advance for your help and please share this post with anyone great.

The better our mentors are the better our students the better our industry will be.

"Compromising your own work to help others thrive. Directing rather than dictating. Giving rather than owning." ?

Thanks so much Mike Nicholson for sharing the School and the value of mentoring. I love how mentors experience so many positives when mentoring, because learning is almost always a two-way experience. In other words, both parties usually leave a conversation energised, inspired, educated. It’s totally a win-win.

I have a love/hate relationship with the advertising industry, but absolutely love mentoring. Something tells me that mentoring the future of the industry could be a good way to make it a little less hateworthy. ?? /adds Marcia to her address book/
