Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of debate about work-life balance. Some argue it’s outdated, and concepts like harmony or integration have taken its place. Others say balance is impossible or even harmful because it implies a perfect split between work and life.
Here’s my take: the name doesn’t matter. What matters is how you approach it.
Whether you call it balance, harmony, blend, or integration, the goal is the same: to create a life where work and life support each other instead of competing for your time and energy.
Here’s the thing: balance isn’t the problem—it’s how we approach it that makes all the difference.
Why It’s Not About the Name
What we call it is just semantics.
The real question is: Does your approach to work and life allow you to thrive?
For me, it’s not about achieving a perfect split or following a set formula (though I am a recovering perfectionist!). It’s about creating space for what matters most—both in work and outside of it—and giving myself permission to adjust as life shifts.
I’ve learned that balance isn’t static. Early in my career, I worked on a project where customs delays held up containers of product. That meant late nights for the team as we rallied to split orders and meet deadlines.
It wasn’t easy, but we made the most of it—playing music, sharing laughs, and leaning on each other to get through it. Because it was a season, not the norm, it felt okay to stretch a little further.
That experience taught me that work-life harmony is about being intentional. Some seasons require more of a focus on work, but when they’re balanced out with moments of connection, rest, and joy, they don’t feel like a sacrifice—they feel like alignment. And honestly, that period brings back fun memories.

Here’s how I think about it:
1?? It’s Personal:
Your approach doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. The goal isn’t to copy someone’s formula but to figure out what feels sustainable and fulfilling to you.
2?? It’s Fluid:
Life isn’t static, and neither is work-life balance (blend, harmony, or integration!). Some seasons require more focus on work; others demand more from life. The key is giving yourself the flexibility to adapt. And, to question the ingrained patterns and beliefs that make you feel like you always have to give more and do more.
3?? It’s About Alignment:
Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for alignment. Are your choices reflecting your values and priorities? If they are, you’re already ahead. If they're not, it's time to reassess and see what small shifts you can make. (Small shifts lead to big changes!)
Try This Today:
Whether you call it work-life balance, harmony, integration, blend, or something else entirely, the goal is simple: to create a life where work and life complement each other -- not tear the other down.
