The Truth About Who You Are (And Why It Matters)

The Truth About Who You Are (And Why It Matters)

Many of us long for more meaning and purpose in our lives.

We want to feel that our time here matters.

That we’re part of something bigger.

That we’re living in alignment with something true.

That longing is natural. It’s not a sign that something is missing but an invitation to recognize what’s already here.

We are not here by accident. Each of us arrives with something uniquely ours to bring to the world. It’s not something we have to earn – it’s in us from the start.

And yet, in a world that feels increasingly chaotic, it’s easy to feel helpless. War, violence, political dysfunction – it can all seem so far beyond our reach. Even in our daily lives, we may feel stuck in work that drains us, relationships that don’t reflect who we truly are, or a future that feels uncertain at best.

The weight of it all can make us believe we are powerless. But that belief is not reality – it’s conditioning. We have been trained to think of ourselves as small, as separate, as limited. We forget the truth of who we are.

Each of us, by simply being here, affects everything around us. We shape the world in ways both seen and unseen. Philosopher Bernardo Kastrup uses a metaphor for this: We are like whirlpools in a river – distinct in form yet inseparable from the whole. Just as a whirlpool cannot exist apart from the water, we are never separate from the larger flow of life. We are part of something vast, interconnected, and alive.

That means the strong sense we have that things could be different – that they should be different – isn’t just wishful thinking. It’s a knowing. A knowing that life can be lived with greater meaning, deeper connection, and truer purpose.

In response to that knowing, we often feel the urge to do something. And action matters. But what matters just as much is the place we act from. Are we moving from fear, frustration, and judgment? Or from a deeper recognition of what’s possible?

If we want more love in the world, we start by embracing more love with our own lives. If we want peace, we cultivate peace in ourselves. If we want freedom, we learn to loosen the grip of the beliefs that keep us stuck.

None of this means withdrawing from the world. Quite the opposite. It means showing up fully, knowing that what we bring – our presence, our choices, our conversations – has impact. The way we live ripples outward.

No law, no leader, no march, no magic wand is going to create the future we long for. But that’s the good news. The future isn’t something happening to us – it’s something being shaped through us.

We don’t have to wait. We just begin. By paying attention to what calls to us. By listening for what is ours to do. By stepping into the world not from a place of fear, but from the deep knowing that we are already part of something greater – and we always have been.
