The TRUTH of Values
The purpose of your organization is to create value for others.
Think about this statement and challenge it if you must, but it is grounded in TRUTH. The same can be said, to some degree, of our lives. Why do we exist?
I have written on this topic before and each time it has come back to ‘purpose.’ Allow me to take a slightly different approach this time. What is value, or valuable in our lives? There are several types of values we can point to in answering this question.
We start with a 'general’ value, one that we might just take for granted as long as we have it, but it increases greatly when we believe we might lose it.? Being true to oneself is a good example. We go along feeling one way but come to realize that this may not be who we truly are. You have allowed outside influences like media, pop culture, or social environments to shape your life.
Next, we see ‘need based’, those values driven by your wants and desires, by the things that make you who or what you are. We need, for example, friends to complete us but we need to carefully choose who they are because we are the product of the people we associate with.
Too many of us seek the next value, ‘bargain' values. These are things that come too easily, with no or little costs associated with them. We settle for less, for the easy paths in life. Those things that do not require much effort. It’s true, we can survive on Twinkies, but steak is so much more satisfying.
Next, I want to talk about ‘premium’ values. They are the ones that require effort, struggle, and commitment. They establish standards well beyond the ordinary, even to the extraordinary. They are things in life to which we may set as goals but may not fully obtain.
There is one final type of value I have not talked about. It is like ‘general’ values but much more prevalent in our lives. It is our ‘core values,’ those basic beliefs that establish who we are and how we will conduct ourselves. Most of us have a somewhat long list of core values and they will increase over time as we discover the things that are most important to us in life.
