The Truth About Sales People....

What comes to your mind when you think of a sales person........?
Is it the cheesy grinning slick well dressed smooth talking over confident and pushy guy who's only interested if you're going to buy something?
Is it the annoying person who calls you out of the blue asking lots of questions about something you have no need or interest in?
Is it the used car sales person who jumps on you the moment you get near the forecourt and starts to tell you what you need?
These tend to be the images that we have when we think of sales people which is down to a few things: media, films, stereotype and unfortunately the reality that there are bad sales people out there.
The problem is that this actually represents the minority of sales people. So the majority of sales people are being judged on the minority, which isn't good for sales people but it's not good for customers too.
To help clear it up, here is the truth about sales people...
1) Sales people work hard, and I mean really hard. They're often the first into the office and also the last out. They work through breaks and lunch against all the challenges they face in their role. They are out travelling far and wide, sat phoning or out and about visiting people all day every day.
2) Sales people want to help you. Yes it's their job to sell, but they're driven by finding solutions to your problems. They want to find a way that their product or service can help you, save you money or make your life easier.
3) Sales people are under A LOT of pressure. The businesses they work for rely on the sales they bring in so they are often put under a lot of pressure to hit targets and KPI's. You may sometimes think that's why they put pressure on you to buy but often it's because they know or believe that they can help you.
4) Sales people will go above and beyond for you. Due to their nature of wanting to help you most sales people will go above and beyond to help you. It makes you wonder why so many people avoid that? I've seen sales people jump through hoops to provide the best service, best product or the best price for their customers.
5) They believe in what they sell. Imagine your favourite film, and I mean your number 1 could watch any day film. Now imagine you met someone who'd never heard of it, you'd probably start doing the "oh my I can't believe you've never seen it, it's so amazing" and so on. Welcome to the world of sales people.
6) Most sales people are honest sellers. Most sales people don't want to sell you something you don't want or need. Most sales people are just looking to see if they can help and if their product or service could benefit you. Gone are the days of the old stereotype.
7) Most sales people value purpose over money. Modern sellers are known for valuing purpose over money which is having a great impact on the sales industry. Sales people are less focused on earning money from you but from feeling like they have a purpose and offer value.

7 年As the old adage goes..."if it was easy, anyone could do it!" It takes hard work, dedication and perseverance to be in sales. I wish people would realize that when I call I am truly interested in helping you/their and your bottom line. Yes, I want to make money, it's my job to, but I believe that my product will in fact help you and your company. I want a long lasting relationship, not one that is a temporary sale for today. Times have changed...we're not in the world of the 50's...ABC! ALWAYS BE CLOSING! We need and desire to maintain and grow our relationship. It calls to mind that meme I saw on LinkedIn where the sales person with a machine gun is approaching a middle ages general about a new idea and the general replies that he has no time for a salesperson (or something along those lines!).
