The TRUTH of Pro-Life and Pro-Choice

It has been a while since I wrote on this subject but with the positions being focused on in the upcoming presidential election, I feel that it is time to revisit it. Two sides have emerged. The first is the “right” a woman has over what happens to her own body. The second is that the issue of abortions has been returned to the states for their decisions. Respectfully, they are both wrong!

Once again, I must remind you that this is a very complex and dividing issue. In my January 24, 2024, article on the subject I tried to lay out arguments presented by both sides; those for abortions and those against. I also stated then that “This is perhaps the most difficult topic I could pick and yet I believe that it is the TRUTH, that it must be addressed for our nation to begin to heal our divides and move forward.” My position then is the same as it is now… At the very heart of the issue is the value of human life.

Life is given to us as a gift by God! No matter what the circumstances, we do not have the “right” to end it. Abortion is not a “right” guaranteed by our Constitution or anything else that man has created. Rape or even incest are not justifications. Yes, they may cause psychological harm to the woman made pregnant by these violent acts, but this harm can be delt within the woman. It will, most likely, be the same in either case – but the child that was the result of the act will be dead. Yes, the choice of life between the mother and the child in some cases is a difficult one, but doctors or anyone else do not have the right to make this choice.

The fact that the Supreme Court ended nearly 50 years of federally protected access to an abortion when they overturned Roe- v. Wade did not solve the problem either. Returning the power to weigh the arguments to the people and their state elected representatives did not make the problem disappear. Even though those on the one hand do not recognize what has happened or, in other words, abortions have not been eliminated as they would like you to believe. They continue to express their FEAR that if the other party gets elected there will be a total ban put into law.

Unfortunately, abortions are not the only way that we demonstrate our low value of human life. War, the encouragement of terror, lax laws and sentencing, homelessness, poor health considerations, the lack of action regarding environmental conditions, even reckless driving and drug use laws contribute to this disregard. As I suggested in a former article entitled Respect Life, “There is no simple answer to why some people have such little regard for human life. The taking of life is a tragic and irreversible act that causes immense suffering and loss. There is no single or simple way to prevent it, but there are steps that we can take individually and collectively to reduce the risk of violence and promote a culture of respect for life.?However, we cannot do it alone. We need to work together with others who share our vision of a peaceful and humane world and support efforts and initiatives that aim to prevent violence and protect life.”

We can also raise our voice and demand that our leaders and institutions take action to address the root causes of violence and create a safer and more just society for everyone. We can all play a role in preventing the taking of life, and we should never give up on this noble
