I recently read an article by Stephen Bungay, "5 Myths About Strategy". One of the myths provoked some interesting thoughts. So the question is "do you really need a strategy or do you just need to be agile?" I believe you need both strategy and agility to implement. Bungay notes "Agility is not strategy. It is a capacity, a very valuable one which has immediate operational benefits..." He goes on to say that a strategy is needed to direct the capacity in the right direction as not to be caught in the whims of responsiveness, or putting out fires as we all them.
I have learned from experience that it is vital to have a strategic system in place along with the right implementation of processes and policies. Agility is necessary to respond to unforeseen internal and external forces but the collaborative process of strategic planning and implementation is the road map to organizational effectiveness.
