The Truth About Goal Setting.

The Truth About Goal Setting.

At some point in our lives, we have all spent tons of time thinking and daydreaming about what lofty goal we secretly would like to do do, but then often settle for outcomes that are way short of our actual ‘big dream'. Don’t get me wrong- we all need smaller goals to get to the big one- there is always a process, but if you really want to achieve a big goal, you need to believe in it, and go after it!!! That big goal could be literally anything. The reality is, the greatest things we achieve in our lives are relative to us as individuals- comparing yourself to someone else or their goals is often irrelevant. Maybe your goal is to win a 100 miler, or run your first 5km, or your huge goal is to become healthier in general. The biggest hurdle or barrier between us and our goals, ironically is many times ourselves! “Theres NO WAY I can do it”, “Thats way too hard for me”, “I don’t even know where to start”, “its not going to work out, so what’s the point in even trying” etc, etc, etc…

“We have nothing to fear, but fear itself”- FDR.

The number one strategy for making something amazing happen, is to first take the risk. Be willing to take a chance, and ‘talk yourself’ INTO doing something, instead of convincing yourself out of it. Often times we are afraid- afraid of failure, or what others might think of our failures, but in the end, no one really gives a damn- except you. Its your goal, afterall. After awhile, you get good at taking calculated risks, and over time, you become more focused and practiced in making your goals come true. Its like learning to ride a bike. Those first days are brutal, with spills and wipeouts, but once you get moving, you never forget how- and you actually have a hard time remembering what it was like before you knew how to pedal a bike- it just seems so natural now!!!

The truth is, every time you set a new goal, there are likely a new set of parameters to get prepared. Perhaps its a new training program, or a new set of tasks or skills you must learn to achieve your goal…but one thing never changes for sure. A steadfast belief and confidence in yourself will be your greatest asset. Big goals are achievable, but the biggest, the very special ones, generally take a ridiculous work effort, and huge, steadfast commitment. If you truly believe you can do something extraordinary in your life- you WILL. Every single one of us has the capacity to do amazing things in our lives, and when we truly believe we can, we become freed from all boundaries.

Thanks Ray and Brad. You have just given me a boot into a new decade and a look back at a time when I didn't need a reminder to get at it !
