The Truth About Family Support In Addiction Treatment

Every once in a while I feel like I just need to be honest about some of the things I see that go on in the field of addiction treatment.
And that's what I did in my this week's blog post. Some may say I even got a little "chippy."

But I can't help it! When things happen that are just plain wrong—like when a family receives woefully inadequate support while their loved one goes through treatment—well, I guess I run a little hot.
So last week when a new client told me her story of trying to support her husband while he was in treatment and the lack of support she received from the facility he was at, I decided to write about it.
But rather than simply focus on the problem, I used this as an opportunity to talk about the solution.
Here's the deal:
Many programs have excellent family programs.
And many families have much better experiences than the story I describe in this week's post.
But the truth is, until we start checking families into treatment along with the clients, there will always be an inherent gap between the the client, the family, and the treatment team.
And those gaps are where important things can fall through the cracks and lead to poor treatment outcomes.
But the good news is there's a lot that can be done to bridge those gaps—things that are totally within the family's control, and that can dramatically improve the chances for treatment success!
That's what I write about in this week's blog post.
