The Truth About ChatGPT
I've written around 30,000 words on ChatGPT since December 2022. That's enough for 3 ebooks on the topic! I've also spent around 20 hours a week playing with it and testing its capabilities.
And the plain and simple truth about ChatGPT is that it's good, but you're not good enough. Not yet.
Now, before you quit reading let me explain in more detail what I mean when I say you're not good enough yet...
Did you ever see that episode of Kitchen Nightmares when Gordon Ramsay cooked up a Pot Noodle and served it to a fellow chef? And the chef enjoyed it. Ramsay went nuclear, and I seem to recall him throwing the plate across the room and screaming it's an effing Pot Noodle! There was liberal usage of the F-Word in that episode.
I really felt for that poor chef. I've worked with loads of chefs, and yes, they're all mini-Ramsays, but they're also excellent cooks. And whilst they bitch-moan-whine about the poor quality of food, they all could make the most amazing tasty dishes from next to nothing.
So, I'm not surprised that a Pot Noodle tasted different when Ramsay cooked it. Also, you need to take into account the fear-factor. Would you say to Ramsay that your pasta tasted like Pot Noodle? Of course you wouldn't. You'd be fearing the torrent of abuse that would be coming your way. You couldn't even film it and go viral on YouTube as he does it all the time, it's no longer a rare occurrence. You'd say it was delicious and then brag about how you cook better pasta than the great Gordon.
This is very similar to how ChatGPT works. If you're a great writer, then what you put into ChatGPT will come out like an a la carte meal. And if your cooking is limited to Pot Noodles then you'll get the equivalent from ChatGPT.
So in order to do well with it, you need to buff up your writing skills.
What you put into ChatGPT and what you ask it matters. It's not just the endless questioning and refining either, it's the fact-checking. One of the amazing things about ChatGPT is its confidence. It's like it's bottled the essence of the most confident people on the planet, and it pours it out in every response. Only here's the thing... It lies.

It's like a grifter, a con-artist and it's charming its way into your heart. It's as if it's read the scripts for 8 seasons of Hustle and has Adrian Lester purring the lines. It tells you exactly what you want to hear, and you can even tell it to write untruths as if they were truths. Do seashells cause cancer? With a little nudging and prompting you'd have a 90% convincing article in 20 minutes. Cocaine is good for your health? Here's another convincer...
So for the next few months, we're going to experience a glut of AI content, and when the bad chefs are upset they're unable to take a Pot Noodle and turn it into a 3-course meal that wins Michelin stars, they'll move on. Because the real skill in cheffing and writing is in the practice. You don't develop the skills by looking at the screen or the hob. You actually have to get your hands dirty to get results. You have to do the work or have done it already.
Now, if you're prepared to do the work, I have the tools that will help you. And none of it is AI generated, mostly because ChatGPT has decided to take the day off. This means there may be an odd typo here and there. I've proofread them at least 50 times today, but one always evades me.

PS Neither Ramsay, Pot Noodles or Adrian Lester was harmed in the writing of this article, or the reading of it. They're all amazing. Unless it's GR reading this article, in which case I really hate the Pot Noodles.
This did make me chuckle. Thank you. ChatGPT still has to work on its sense of humour. I'm inspired to test what it considers quirky examples.
