Truth Builds Trust

Yesterday, I had a truth-telling moment with my team.
As our first Teams meeting started, someone asked, “How are you?” But instead of giving the obligatory, "I'm fine, thanks", I paused and really thought about it.
The truth is I am not fine right now.
I felt like what I was being presented with was a perfect opportunity to be honest and engage more deeply with other around me. I was being offered and opportunity to create a safe space for truth and sharing our real lived experience.
So, I took a deep breath and said, “Things are really tough right now.”
We all acknowledged the daily platitudes that mask what's really going on for us, and then my colleague thought of a motivational quote they had read earlier that day that stated:
It will all be fine in the end, and if it's not fine, it's not the end.
What I uncovered was the fact that yes, things may be tough right now, but I am tougher.
From that moment, a game unfolded: The Honesty Game. The rule was simple: you had to say how you were really doing, no masks, no pretences.
So we did.
The results? A great meeting. A great day. We helped each other out, and yes, we did good business.
That was it—honesty transformed the dynamic.
When truth is shared, it builds trust. And trust? That’s the foundation of any great team. It’s what allows us to support each other, problem-solve effectively, and create an environment where people can thrive.
Trust your teams. Build good businesses. And be kind to each other.
