The Truth About Balance

The Truth About Balance

As an equity partner in a large law firm, everyone thought she “had it all”, and yet… She couldn’t fathom why anyone would want her life and wanted to laugh hysterically when being touted as a role model.

She questioned whether it’s really possible to have a balanced lifestyle as an equity partner in a law firm. Because she felt like she had tried everything already.

  • Productivity hacks.
  • Time management tricks.
  • Tools for both.

Despite her best efforts, nothing seemed to work. If anything, she was feeling more stressed, overwhelmed and imbalanced than ever.

She kept telling herself she should be able to figure this out on her own. Until her husband politely reminded her that she’d been doing “alone” for a while now.

***

I hear a version of this again and again.

  • You’re smart.
  • You’ve excelled in the law.
  • You’re exceedingly capable.

Yet you feel like you’re failing at the most important things, like:

  1. Life management (you struggle to find time to go to the dentist or schedule a plumber to fix your bathroom leaky faucet).
  2. Relationships (it feels like you spend most of your car time - with your kids - on the phone with colleagues and need to constantly check emails when out with friends & family).
  3. Prioritization (you’re spending the vast majority of your time on work and most of your work time on things that aren’t even all that important to you).

Here’s what you need to know:

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness or failure.?

It’s actually a strength (that will get you further, faster).

And BTW, human beings are made to connect with one another.?

Part of connecting is helping, which is a two way street - someone must give and someone must receive (which means sometimes you are meant to be on the receiving end).

Stop trying to do everything on your own. The best part is that it’s more fun with others anyway.

Choices mean trade-offs. Having it all is not truly possible.

This idea that you shouldn’t - or don’t - have to make trade-offs isn’t reality. Every choice you make has a trade off. The key is to ensure you're aligning your choices with your values + priorities.

And ask yourself… Do you really want “it all”? What does that even mean?

[Hint: nope, you really don't want or need "it all".]

But don’t just listen to me. Here is what my client Virginia learned:

I’ve learned that there isn’t a quick time management fix to becoming more balanced. Everyone has to make trade-offs. That is life. It is on me to decide what to prioritize and let go of. The key is to be intentional.”

Which brings me to the third point. Using Virginia’s very words…

The key is to be intentional.

Intentionality is what’s missing from your life right now (it's why you feel that you're always triaging as you jump from one fire to another).?

The thing you need to do? Prioritize properly.

But you can't do that unless you have:

  • Clarity around what you truly want out of your practice and life (which leads you to a simple, strategic plan of action).
  • A strong, resilient mentality (the empowers you to let go of what others think and have strong boundaries).
  • Accountability that supports you to keep moving forward (even when it feels vulnerable and hard).

This can feel a bit scary. Maybe even terrifying.

But I promise it’s worth it.

Ready to create your intentional life and practice??

Intentionality is they key, no matter what you’re doing—professional, personal and in between. It’s very hard, though!

The key is to be intentional - I couldn't agree more. I left a role as General Counsel when my boys were in middle school and was convinced that I couldn't be the mom I wanted to be and work at all. I had no role models for someone like me. Fortunately for me the CEO of a corporate wellness company of all things recruited me to join the executive team in a role other than attorney and I learned some great lessons in the incredible power of intentionality. Amazing that you can be the voice inside your clients head to help them discover what is most important to them.

This narrative resonates deeply. It's a powerful reminder that even those who seem to 'have it all' can struggle with balance and fulfillment.?
