The truth about ambition and ‘overnight success’

Success is a slippery beast. It’s so easy to get caught up in the highlight reels of those around us, while forgetting the weeks, months or years of work that have gone into their achievements.

My own recent experience of success reminded me of this.

After years of work pursuing my professional speaker ambitions to share the messages of the Gender Code - building my profile, providing quality experiences to clients and honing my message - I was named the Next Level Speaker of 2024 by Professional Speakers Australia at their Connect24 event in Perth.

It was an overwhelming and exciting moment, made all the more special by sharing it with friends and colleagues in the room who’ve supported me on my speaking journey.

I’m still pinching myself about the whole thing, but I’ve had some time to reflect now on what it means to be ambitious and to aspire to the ‘next level’.

• In business, it might mean growing profits, entering new markets or launching new products.
• Within teams, it might be about helping each person to reach their potential.
• As individuals, it might mean understanding our unique code for life, and creating a life based on what’s important to us, using the tools we have.

Ambition is uniquely personal experience - we all have different dreams and hopes, and as with most things in life, once we achieve our ambitions we’re far from done.

For me, achieving the ambition of being a highly-regarded professional speaker has cemented for me the importance of my work, the value I can add to others, and the new goals I’d love to aim for.
