Do You Have the Human Touch in a Digital World?
I was nerding out recently and looking at our historical timeline, from the Stone Age to the Digital Age. The irony is that I am looking at our human timeline during a period of history when we are losing time to scrolling through the timelines on social media platforms. Weird.
Welcome to the digital age where algorithms reign supreme! They decide what we see, hear, and even think about. Algorithms curate our feeds, suggest our next purchase, and match us with potential friends or partners. But despite their pervasiveness, I'm arguing why your personal network is more reliable than the algorithms that overwhelm our online lives.
The Personal Touch
Algorithms are designed to optimize engagement, keep you scrolling, and increase ad revenue. Here's the thing: algorithms don't really know you. They analyze data points, draw correlations, and spit out content created to capture your attention. Your network, on the other hand, is built on real human connections. These are people who know you beyond your online profile. They understand your quirks, your passions, and your dreams. When you need advice or recommendations from your network, you're tapping into a well of personal experience and real support.
The Power of Trust
Trust is the currency of human relationships, and it's something algorithms can't buy. When a friend recommends a restaurant or a movie, you're likely to trust their opinion because you value their taste and judgment. Algorithms might suggest similar recommendations, but they lack the credibility and emotional resonance of your friend's advice. Trust is built through shared experiences and mutual respect, essential elements missing in algorithmic suggestions.
The Wisdom of the Crowd
Algorithms rely on massive datasets and complex calculations. But, your network operates on what I call the wisdom of the crowd. Each person in your network brings their own experiences, knowledge, and insights to the table. This collective intelligence often leads to more nuanced and practical recommendations than the cold calculations of an algorithm. When you crowdsource advice from your network, you're leveraging a diverse pool of perspectives that can provide richer and more meaningful insights.

The Danger of Echo Chambers
One of the biggest pitfalls of algorithms is their tendency to create echo chambers. By constantly showing you content that aligns with your current preferences, algorithms reinforce your beliefs and limit your exposure to new ideas. This can lead to a narrow worldview and a lack of critical thinking. Dare I say that algorithms can unknowingly turn you into an asshole? Real talk. In contrast, your human network, with its diverse range of opinions and experiences, can challenge your assumptions and broaden your horizons. Engaging with real people who think differently from you is crucial for personal growth and intellectual development.
Your Authenticity Matters
In a world where fake news and misinformation are rampant, your authenticity is more important than ever. Algorithms can be manipulated, and their outputs can be biased or misleading. Algorithms are not authentic. Your network, however, is rooted in intentional interactions and real relationships. When you rely on your network for information and recommendations, you're going to get genuine and trustworthy advice (whether you like it or not). People who know you have a vested interest in your well-being and are a lot less likely to lead you down the wrong path (unlike doomscrolling).
The Human Element
At the end of the day, what sets your network apart from algorithms is the HUMAN element. Algorithms are powerful tools, but they lack the empathy, intuition, and emotional intelligence that define human interactions. Your network understands context, humor, and nuance—things that algorithms struggle to grasp. By relying on your network, you're cultivating meaningful connections and reinforcing the social bonds that make us human.
While social algorithms are here to stay and can be incredibly useful, all I'm saying is that algorithms are no substitute for the reliability and richness of your personal network. By tapping into the collective wisdom, trust, and authenticity of your network, you can make more informed decisions and enjoy deeper, more meaningful connections. So next time you're looking for advice or a recommendation, please hear me when I say: there's no algorithm for human connection!
Trust your network—it knows you better than any algorithm ever could.

3 个月Mikki L. Wilson - your point about echo chambers got me thinking. "...that algorithms can unknowingly turn you into an asshole?" Also, though. Algorithms might make you think the world doesn't need your message. Hear me out: if all day long you see stuff from people in your own industry, spouting thought leadership you agree with, and preaching to the choir, you might think, "I don't need to say it because Mr. Noisy has already been saying it for months now." But Mr. Noisy isn't saying it the way YOU would. So algorithms keep you boxed into your little corner of the internet and keep you from forgetting that REGULAR PEOPLE NEED YOUR SHIT.
Insirational article...thank you
