Trusting GOD When Plans Go Sideways (Just Ask Abram)
Have you ever come up with a plan so creative—so out there—
that it actually made the situation more complicated?
Well, you’re in good company because Abram
one of the Bible’s patriarchs, did just that in Genesis 12.
Let’s see how one of his less-than-stellar ideas turned
into a reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness.
Context
Genesis 12:11-13 (NIV) "As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, 'I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, "This is his wife." Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.’"
Abram and Sarai are on the move
escaping a famine in Canaan and heading to Egypt.
But just as they approach the city gates,
Abram’s fear kicks into overdrive.
He’s worried that Sarai’s beauty will attract dangerous attention, so he hatches a bold—and let’s be honest, pretty awkward—plan.
Sarai will pretend to be his sister, not his wife.

Reflection
Okay, Abram, we get it—you’re nervous.
But telling your wife to pose as your sister?
That’s basically the ancient equivalent of, “Honey, pretend we’re strangers so I don’t have to deal with awkward questions at this party.”
Abram’s logic: If they think we’re siblings, I’ll get VIP treatment.
Classic survival mode, but it feels like he’s volunteering Sarai for an episode of Ancient Egyptian Soap Opera.
Takeaway
Even when fear clouds our judgment,
God’s plan and protection remain steadfast,
reminding us that we can trust Him
rather than our harebrained schemes.
Reflective Question
What’s one time you overcomplicated something instead of trusting God—did it involve your spouse or dessert?
