Trust Yourself

Stoic Quote of the Week

You will earn the respect of all if you begin by earning the respect of yourself. -Musonius Rufus

What I learned this week:

I had the opportunity to share one of my passion projects with a large group of people this week at Ignite Denver 38 (#ignitedenver). That project is about how to be a great leader, and it is simple to say but, as always, tough to execute. The secret to great leadership is trust. I describe leadership trust as the Trust Triad with these three components: Trust Yourself; Trust Your Team, and the Team Trusts the Leader. It all starts within us. We must trust ourselves and believe with no doubt that the decisions we are making are the best that we can do now with the information and time that we have available. I am reminded of this all the time. I can’t keep count of how many times I have said, choose A, not B, or some other decision and then thought, is that right, should I have chosen B? What if I’m wrong? What if I’m right? These natural questions come into our heads with every choice we make. The skill to develop is picking one, going with it, and trusting yourself. If you don’t trust yourself, whether you are leading a team or not, you won’t be able to focus on the outcome. That doubt will always be a distractor. When you believe in your decisions, you can focus on the outcome. Whether you achieve it or not, you know that you can make the best of it because you know you made the best decision. Believe in yourself, and you will succeed.

Planning thought of the week:

We have been talking about the plan and how important the plan is for success. The most important thing about a plan is being able to adjust off it. In the military, because we have professional planners, we create branches and sequels. When you have nothing to do but plan, then you can do that. A branch plan is a shift or pivot. A sequel is what you do when you have success and want to build on it. Most business leaders don’t have the time to do these. You should, at a minimum, talk them through. Then you will be that much more prepared when something happens.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:

Following the ‘rona and the supply chain failures, there is a trend to make it here in the good ol’ USA. Of course, the price of the goods is going to be higher because you are paying Americans to manufacture and build it and not someone in Pakistan, India, or China. But that should never stop you from creating the Levi’s, Wrangler, or Tony Lama. There are ways around the funding start-up walls. The whole thing revolves around you having a solid plan and a solid market. What if 10,000 people wanted to buy American-sourced items? They know the price will be higher but are dedicated to making a change in our economy.

Veteran opportunity of the week:

Google Veterans Network (VetNet) is hosting a virtual career fair this week, 21-23 June 2022. You can register and learn more here .

Someone I met this week:

I met Katherine, Kat, through the Denver Ignite group. She was the coordinator and host for the whole thing, which was great. To those of us sitting on the outside, looking in, it looked like the entire thing would be a flop; there was even a suggestion to delay a couple of weeks. But you know what is amazing about someone like Kat? That didn’t faze her one bit. She was confident that it would all come together, including the audience. On top of all that, Kat was funny and entertaining as the MC. Keep an eye out for Ignite 39 in Oct. Whether you are a speaker or in the audience, it is an entertaining event. By the way, the event was NOT a flop. It was awesome!
