Trust what the process is telling you

Trust what the process is telling you

You get contacted by a talent acquisition professional and you hear a story about an opportunity and you're super excited to find out more.

We go through our interview process and then we introduce you to the company...

And then...

And then...

14 weeks later we've got some progress...

To companies out there that go through a process like this...Are you getting A+ players?

To candidates that experience this process: Are you their first choice? If you do get hired, how are you going to build your team ? If you aren't a hiring manager, how long will it take them to find you a peer to share the workload?

I didn't realize before getting into talent acquisition what the actual process was telling me. When I interviewed 12 years ago to get into this field, I met with the Owner of a talent acquisition company (Company A), I thought it went great, he said I need you to meet Owner 2. So I did. I thought it went great, Owner 2 said I need you to meet my VP. I thought it went great. VP said I need you to meet X. So I did.

After my 4th visit to their office to meet X, (and thinking I'm about to get an offer), I called one of their competitors and asked one of the Owners of that firm if she thought it'd be a good fit for me, her response was "We're hiring".

I had lunch with her and her business partner the next day and they made me an unofficial offer at lunch, which I accepted. I started with them as an Executive Recruiter in Accounting and Finance, less than a year later was leading a team in Engineering, and less than a year later was leading the Accounting and Finance function.

I'm not saying I'm an A player but I found my calling in talent acquisition and when I'd later compete against Company A, you can bet your $%# I never lost.

Company A had a process filled with doubt and not really a whole lot of conviction, perhaps they didn't know their internal definition of an A player, Company B that I joined had a process, trusted it, and it led to a successful run for both of us.

Thank you for this insightful article!!!! I don't care what industry you work in, when you interview an outstanding candidate forget all of this nonsense that you have to jump through multiple hopes, meet 6 different business leaders and then take 3 personality profiles and maybe just maybe after that process is complete we will get back to you in a few weeks or months if this is a great fit!!! This is a perfect example of company A wasting everyone's time and losing out on an amazing candidate that went to the competitor due to archaic hiring practices. Good for you joining a great company and finding the best fit for you!!! In my personal experience, companies who have such ridiculous hiring practices end up having similar policies and procedures once you are actually in the door and you are better off not working for such an organization anyway. Thank you for this insightful article!!!!! #letsgo!!!

Would love to see the better process more, it is based on a process, empowerment and TRUST. We hired you to do a job, and we are going to trust you to do it (within the guardrails - good process). I wish all jobs were like that.

This article is a good reflection of of my experiences last summer when interviewing for a new opportunity. It’s a total waste of time, energy, and effort in these type of situations. Good read!
